I thought the actual subject matter sounded neat, but Binns was a just plain terrible teacher. He apparently managed to suck the excitement out of goddamn magical wars; that takes talent. The method of transmitting the information is just as important as the information itself.

Oh, HELL YEAH! I love me my history, and history with dragons in it would make my day.

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! Me and a friend were just talking about this, actually, and we both admire Hermione for wanting to learn EVERYTHING about this fantastic new world that she became a part of, even though it meant sitting through those awful lectures. Which.. I can't really blame them for hating. I'm sure the material itself was interesting, but with an approach like Binns', I can see why nobody learned anything. \:

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I get that. You'd think Harry would have been interested just by virtue of knowing *nothing* about this brand new world he's discovered and loves so much.

Wasn't that the point? That he was just such a ridiculously boring lecturer that he could make "bloody giant wars" seem like watching C-span?

I know I had a professor whose voice just knocked me out, but that was in Chemistry.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This fanart is just beautiful. I have to admit through the books I felt bad about Professor Binns' too - mostly because I loved the Hogwarts universe and thought his class would be the only one which would investigate that side of magic!

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I always felt like that would be my favorite class, and everyone else would be like, seriously? You're actually ALIVE in that class? And me and Prof. Binns would be BFFs and it would be awesome.

In short, I agree.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
It would have been one of my favourite subjects, that's for sure T_T

Oh come on, most of us have had terrible history teachers in grade school, so I think the stereotype of the boring history teacher is one with some basis in reality.

I majored in history, BTW

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I wanna know so more about the Goblin riots, you have no idea. I understand that he's boring, but the material is really interesting! That could be my inner nerd speaking though.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck, thank you for making this secret.

When I was a little tiny anthropologist I couldn't get enough of Binns' class. I was seriously peeved (lol see wat i did there) at Harry & co for not appreciating fucking goblin riots and all the "part-human" magical creature tension inherent in the subject material. Binns might've sucked as a teacher, but remember, when the students engaged him he sometimes had the possibility to be interesting (see: Chamber of Secrets). So it wasn't all his fault.

You can bet if I was in there I'd have LOVE YOU painted on my eyelids like that stalker in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I agree with whoever said they thought Harry would be really interested in the history of the world he should have grown up in. I'm sure Hermione was interested and I'd think any other muggle-born students should have been as well.

Yeah, I've had a few teachers/professors who weren't particularly stimulating in their lectures or activities but the subject matter itself explains so much and can be more exciting.

[identity profile] nota-lone.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if Professor Binns had office hours. Ghost office hours.
You could attend them and become his friend. <3 I don't think I would be so scared of ghosts if they were friendly history teachers.

[identity profile] august-suns.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I always figured he was just boring. History is great, but personally I get really bored if the teacher just drones on, like he does.
Plus, he's DEAD. The guy doesn't need to breathe. He can just go on and on and on and on...

[personal profile] ladysugarquill 2011-04-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
The funny thing is, Harry liked History when he was reading it (he named Hedwig after someone in Bathilda's book after all). He only started to dislike it because Binns is such a bad teacher.

Which id Truth in Television, sadly. (I fortunately got the opposite, and awesome teacher who made me love History)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
As had been said above, I don't think it was the subject that bored the class. It was the teacher.

I myself adore literature and cinema. When I was at university, I took as many literature and cinema classes as possible. I was particularly interested in Asian cinema and was so excited when my uni finally got an Asian Cinema class.

It ended up being my most hated class. All because the teacher was fucking boring. She would drone on and on and on about topics that she clearly didn't understand. And the fact that her voice was monotone didn't help the matter. Try as I might, I got drowsy in every class. >_>

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
So, I love history and if I had the money I would totally continue to take history classes in college just for fun.

But a bad teacher is a bad teacher. A bad teacher can take even the most awesome of subjects and make it difficult.

It also might be that I had a teacher in high school who had a voice that sounded like Ben Stein, and when I started reading HP I could totally see how Harry and company would have such issues with Binns.

I would prefer Snape to Binns, because at least the terror of possibly getting in trouble would keep my attention and motivate me to focus and study.

(Of all the teachers, my favorite in terms of style would be McGonagall and Flitwick.)

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's Binns' fault and yeah, it's a plot device (though damn, I really wish people would stop excusing everything not well executed in the book with the Harry POV) but I was still personally disappointed that so little of what was going on in that class ever becomes important.

Agreed, I love history. I also wish he'd been in the movies, but someone that "boring" in the books wouldn't be that interesting in the movies. Also, PEEVES D:

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
How Binns taught the class was awful IMO, but as someone for whom history was one of her favourite subjects I was a bit disappointed that things were never stated as useful outside of perhaps CoS.

There was a small mention in book 7 really what with the goblin rebellions and all, but of course now that the goblins know harry as a little cheat as well as someone who broke into gringotts he is going to be dirt as far as the goblins are concerned. And they control all the money.

They're possibly not going to give a damn that he 'saved the WW' he tried to back out of a bargin over an item they believed rightfully theirs. Oh and broke into Gringotts.

I was disappointed at some of the more interesting elements Rowling dropped (like the treatment of non-humans etc.). It could have been really interesting to see that well, there's sort of a reason some of the non-human people/ werewolves etc joined voldemort or are not happy with wizards in general. I mean the WW kind of treated them like crap overall.

I'm late to this comment thread and ten to one no one will read this comment, but... I loved history in school and nearly read it at university, but I suspect if I'd gone to magic school, even as a muggle born, I would probably have spent my time going "LOOK, MA, NO HANDS! JUST WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!" and learning every spell and potion I could get my hands on. I'm not saying that the urge to learn about this new world's history and customs wouldn't exist, but if the professor who taught the class was as dull as sin, I imagine that the impetus would be lost and overtaken bythe fact that you could do magic, you know?

And from Harry's point of view, he's taken from a place where he is treated like the lowest of the low and given apparently untold power with the flick of a bit of stick. He picks up that which he sees as being relevant (Floo powder, Apparition, wizarding customs) as he goes along, and has both Hermione and Ron helping him with that. Obviously, the ideal student is really Hermione, who maintains her interest regardless, you know? And who learns everything she can about quite literally everything on offer, and that's amazing. But, you know, with a crap teacher and some other pretty amazing options I, personally, can't blame Harry for not focussing on History of Magic.

Er, not sure if I'm making any sense. Basically, OP, I think you've got a point and that history's important, but... IDK, I can't really blame Harry/J.K. Rowling for not playing it that way. :D?

[identity profile] liyosa.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, school was generally not given a good rap in the series.

I mean, seriously, sixth book, it's like the school was basically a scene setter for really cool and dangerous magic scenes.

:/
