Yeah, it's Binns' fault and yeah, it's a plot device (though damn, I really wish people would stop excusing everything not well executed in the book with the Harry POV) but I was still personally disappointed that so little of what was going on in that class ever becomes important.

It does become important. The goblin wars, especially, would have been helpful for simply understanding goblin society. The founder history becomes important (I wasn't surprised that few people cared for that class. I was more surprised no one cared about the ghosts enough to know more than their own house ghost. I mean seriously, nobody knew the Grey Lady was Helena Ravenclaw?). They just didn't learn any of that info from Binns.
