I'm late to this comment thread and ten to one no one will read this comment, but... I loved history in school and nearly read it at university, but I suspect if I'd gone to magic school, even as a muggle born, I would probably have spent my time going "LOOK, MA, NO HANDS! JUST WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!" and learning every spell and potion I could get my hands on. I'm not saying that the urge to learn about this new world's history and customs wouldn't exist, but if the professor who taught the class was as dull as sin, I imagine that the impetus would be lost and overtaken bythe fact that you could do magic, you know?

And from Harry's point of view, he's taken from a place where he is treated like the lowest of the low and given apparently untold power with the flick of a bit of stick. He picks up that which he sees as being relevant (Floo powder, Apparition, wizarding customs) as he goes along, and has both Hermione and Ron helping him with that. Obviously, the ideal student is really Hermione, who maintains her interest regardless, you know? And who learns everything she can about quite literally everything on offer, and that's amazing. But, you know, with a crap teacher and some other pretty amazing options I, personally, can't blame Harry for not focussing on History of Magic.

Er, not sure if I'm making any sense. Basically, OP, I think you've got a point and that history's important, but... IDK, I can't really blame Harry/J.K. Rowling for not playing it that way. :D?
