If you look closely, you'll see an anon running around here who is demonstrating the sort of thing that I think OP was trying to explain (although something tells me they're the same person).

Imagine if you said this:

"Hey maybe you should stop saying shitty offensive things and using slurs because that's offensive and hurtful and plays into such and such forms of oppression."

like this:

"Hey, you're a piece of shit. Go slit your own throat, you bigoted asshole."

What effect do you think it would have?

I once read a conversation between a cis girl trying to understand trans issues and a trans man who was...well, kind of full of hate. The cis girl had some serious misconceptions about gender identity and what it means to be trans, and someone called her out on it. So she started asking questions in order to better understand and make sure she didn't make the same mistakes again. The trans man kept insulting her, saying that as a cis person, she was flaunting her privilege, and that she was a bigot, and so on and so forth. She apologized to him for her initial ignorance, and he accused her of backpedaling and went off on her, dropping f-bombs all over the place and basically telling her she was a piece of shit and that she had no right to even be having such a conversation.

Do you think that was at all helpful? Because I certainly don't.
