When I was in high school I had friends who adored LotR, and I could never make it past Bree*. Tried three times. Finally, in college, I took a class on fantasy lit, where I knew I would have to read the trilogy. Dutifully read the assigned pages each day, but no more. Finally got to the middle of the Two Towers one night and glanced at the next page out of idle curiosity.

"Frodo and Sam," I said to myself, "I like Frodo and Sam." I checked the clock and it wasn't midnight yet, so I thought I'd read a bit longer, just this once.

I finished The Return of the King as the sun was rising the next morning...
And I've lost count of how many times I've read it since.

So, yeah, LotR isn't the easiest read in the world, but I still think persistence pays off.

*I figured this out, btw, much later. It's because the whole Tom Bombadil and Old Forest sequence is like a first level game of D&D or WFRP, where you get into trouble, get rescued by a powerful NPC, and maybe manage to collect a special weapon or armor. (Merry's sword, I'm looking at *you*!). So by the time they got to Bree it felt like they were done!
