What the crap is this "better?"

We're not talking about a serious case of adaptation distillation/decay here. No one took Stuart Little and turned it into a travesty that bore no resemblance to the book beyond there being a mouse named Stuart, no one took Shrek and added personality and character where there had once been a fun-but-flat story. In terms of faithful adaptations, Lord of the Rings is second only to The Princess Bride because it captures the essence of the core material while changing it to fit a new medium.

Neither is better than the other. You may find one more enjoyable, certainly, but it's apples to oranges to compare them in terms of quality. One is a book, the other is a movie. One is pure prose (well, little bit of poetry), the other is audio-visual. The story-telling and the elements that determine quality will change drastically with the change in media. The story itself remains the same, most of the characters remain unchanged, but now we're dealing with effects and acting and music where before we dealt with prose and language. There's no "better."

I love the movies. I love the books. I have no problem with some people preferring one over the other--that's a matter of taste. But neither is "better."
