(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 08:56 am (UTC)(link)... well, I think a lot of things about them, and none of 'em are flattering. >__> Seriously, emotional range of a teaspoon there or what.
He'll totally be redeemed and get to come home and be loved. Naruto won't let the series end until that happens, the themes of the series won't make sense until that happens, Gaara did worse and was redeemed, Sasuke deserves to be healed and find peace and stop hurting. Sure he's done terrible things and he needs to atone for them, but the idea that he was dealt such a shit hand and would end up dying à la "hahaha that's what you deserve you asshole woohoo happy end for everyone" makes me sick.
He dedicated his whole life to his dead family. It's like he feels he deserves no life of his own, because of all those silent expectations.
I hope when his happy end comes you feel better about the potential for your own. People hold lots of characters to stupid high standards because they're anime characters and if they're not Obviously Good and display jealousy or moments of misdirected anger or the like most characters are seen as morally weak/suspect somehow, when 90% people out there would have weaker/more assholish moments without seeing themselves/their friends as bad at all. It's human nature, no one can be as perfect as a shounen hero. They wouldn't hold a real person to the same impossible standards, unless they're incredibly non-empathic. They wouldn't hold you to it. What's criticized and judged offhand in an anime character would be much harder to be criticized face to face with a real, three dimensional person.
(note, i'm not saying sasuke doesn't display a TON of misdirected anger and jealousy and other emotional problems, and that he hasn't made very questionable choices, and if someone gets that he has trauma on his trauma and still doesn't like his type of character, that's their right. But even when it's not that bad by far people tend to be really ambivalent about flawed characters, when those flaws are things they don't like to see in themselves... and I have no idea where I was going with that anymore, so I'll stop rambling here.)

I feel weird assigning an indisputable diagnosis to a fictional character who wasn't written with a specific mental disorder in mind, but you'd have to be rather thick to assume Sasuke pulls this shit because he's just a naturally vile person. Even if I hated antihero/moral-gray-area types of characters, I'd say he has plenty of reasons for being such an insufferable bastard. Even if you disregard the trauma, the PLOT is forcing him onto the dark side beyond the reach of redemption. That's, you know, the entire purpose of his character.
