Seeing as no one actually got laid in the anime, they had to serve some sort of practical function, didn't they?

The manga scene was shorter during the temple scene; he never grabbed her hand, and they didn't lean in to kiss. It was the same when Rei confesses to Takashi; he never flips her on her back on the bed, nor was there any hint of them doing anything that would cause them to breathe that heavily or for her to giggle.
Look at the OVA: It looks like Takashi and Saeko are having sex, but he was really dreaming of having an orgy with Saeko, Rei, Saya, and Shizuka-sensei...which turned out to be 4 zombies trying to eat him and he's "trying to fend them off".
The only good thing that came out of that was SaexRei (now THAT is implying sex), and a hint at a new season.
