Not much, but a start.

Ooo. I am already quite aware of my soft spot for fictional sociopaths. Can anyone tell me some more about these books?

Pimpin' it like... pimping.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
They're set in near-future, dystopian Europe, in a corrupt, totalitarian yet liberal society, deliciously screwed up just like the protagonists.
And the author is an awesome person who puts 90% of her work online for free, particularly the first novel.

I started reading it online first, then got the books because she is just that fucking awesome.

I always have to remind myself that this is supposed to be a dystopia, because half the time I'm thinking that it's an awesome system. I kinda fail at politics here. ;)

That sounds right up my street! And the first book being online is enticingly convenient.

Thanks, anon! Much appreciated.

this is the author's blurb for the books:

There are no bad guys or good guys. There are only better guys and worse guys.

One of the worse guys is Val Toreth. In a world in which torture is a legitimate part of the investigative process, he works for the Investigation and Interrogation Division, where his colleagues can be more dangerous than the criminals he investigates.

One of the better guys is Keir Warrick. His small corporation, SimTech, is developing a “sim” system that places users in a fully immersive virtual reality.

A minnow in a murky and dangerous pond, he is only beginning to discover how many compromises may be required for success.
Their home is the dark future dystopia of New London. A totalitarian bureaucracy controls the European Administration, sharing political power with the corporations. The government uses violence and the many divisions of the feared Department of Internal Security to maintain control and crush resistance. The corporations fight among themselves, using lethal force under the euphemism of “corporate sabotage,” uniting only to resist attempts by the Administration to extend its influence over them.
Toreth and Warrick are more natural enemies than allies. But mutual attraction and the fight for survival can create unlikely bonds.

i agree with the secret maker - although i'm sorry to hear about their past - the books are great! well-written, well-edited, well-paced and smutty but not in that way when the storyline is just an excuse for teh pron. it just fits in seamlessly.

and ooh, mr torreth, ooh. you might torture people for a living but i still can't get over you.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
whoops, looks like someone got the info out faster. oh well. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-05-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The extra informtion you posted has only got me more intrigued. :D Thanks!

[identity profile] linndechir.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Toreth is one of the most complex, well-written characters I've read in a long time, and probably THE most well-written, realistic sociopathic character I've ever seen in anything. I think being attracted to him after reading these books is only a natural reaction.

The lack of fandom is probably due to the fact that nobody even knows about these books. And those who do probably don't really feel the urge to write fanfic because the books fulfil most fanfic needs. Still, a comm to talk about the books, and share the occasional fic, would be beyond awesome.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
ohgod I remember this series.

disturbing, and very very nicely done bdsm, though not really ssc. Looks like it's in for a reread. I'll make a fandom with you anon! <3

[identity profile] yuzigangstalady.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's the fandom?
Good question, I ask myself this too.

I do find it debatable whether the character of Toreth could actually qualify as a sociopath.
And it sucks that you had to put up with something like that in your childhood.

[identity profile] atheist-cheese.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
why so? I'm curious to know why you think so. to me he's pretty clearly sociopathic, but maybe I'm not looking at it from the right angle.

[identity profile] yuzigangstalady.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not an expert in psychology, but a sociopath is someone who lacks the ability to care for others, and views people as 'things' to use, as opposed to actual human beings. Maybe in the first two books Toreth could have fit the profile of a sociopath, but definitely not in the others. (His obvious care and protectivenss of Sara, his attachment and affection to Warrick, etc. In First Against the Wall he goes back to I&I because he's concerned for Chevril and members of his team.)

Toreth strikes me more as having developed a dislike of intimancy, and a use for violence/manipulation because of the environment he grew up in, as opposed to actually having a personality disorder like sociopathy. Feel free to argue with me on this point, btw.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-02 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem with sociopaths is that people think it's a clear-cut category, but the way I understand it there are degrees of sociopathy, just like with any other personality disorder. Toreth may not be a typical or extreme case of sociopathy, because he IS capable of caring for others in a few selected cases, but that doesn't mean he's not a sociopath at all.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-02 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's not only a dislike of intimacy and use for violence; Torreth is an extremly selfish person. He DOES view most people as things to use. He's most definitely a sociopath, but as the person above said, there are different grades. He's not the 100% clear-cut case of one, but in my eyes there's no doubt about him having that personality disorder.

(God, I sound so defensive. It's not my intention. English isn't my first language and I tend to write it a bit crudely. I'm sorry.)

This is the second time I've seen a secret about these books and thought "hmm, I really need to go read these".
Damnit. I'll check the library one day.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-02 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
You're not likely to find them in a library, guess they'll be a tad too raunchy. Also, the publisher is tiny and not well-known. Most of it, esp. the first novel, is available online at http://mannazone.org/zone/admin/index.html ^^

[identity profile] lincolnimp.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I started reading them a month ago. SO much love for those books!
