I hope that's just a random picture you chose to illustrate your point, because if someone actually drew Aziraphale like that... LOL.

There was a cartoonist who designed versions of Aziraphale and Crowley I liked. Crowley was all sharp edges, and Aziraphale was all nice, round pudge. Neither of them were particularly bishie.

None of the fics I've ever read described Aziraphale like that. He was always described as pudgy and middle-aged and just... I guess, average.

I like that version of him, because I just can't see him as a perfect pretty boy.

Actually, a lot of the really good fanart I've seen portrays him correctly, even if it is slash. It's mostly noobish fangirls who've just gotten into Good Omens and possibly anime at the same time who draw him like that, as far as I've seen.
Anyhow, frumpy Azi all the way. IA that it makes the slash more appealing.

You and me both, anon. I'm sure there's plenty of good GO fanart for the less-bishie-inclined, but I wouldn't know where to search...

I imagine him to be handsome, but not pretty. And, for some reason, stubble.

[identity profile] cyntosis.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only recently read the book, and I've been wanting to draw some fanart, but I can't come up with a design I find suitable. Looking around what other people did, most seem to gravitate towards stereotypical angel-demon bishies. But only the best fanartists can make them look both recognizable as what they are, and non-stereotypical.

linnpuzzle's Aziraphale & Crowley will always be my Aziraphale & Crowley, even though the former is probably too young and pretty.

[identity profile] exova.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Right on, OP. I've always pictured Aziraphale as soft-bodied and a hopeless dresser, and I love fic that portrays him that way. [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic does it well, for instance.

[identity profile] aramis-chan.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
We must have looked at completely different fanart. :/

I've always imagined him looking like a Greek statue with less muscle.

A bit like this:

or possibly this (NSFW):
http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=Greek%20Statue%20Man&order=9&offset=24&offset=24#/d1u0sox

Not necessarily very conventionally attractive, not too old or young, but certainly nice to look upon. :D And always with curly hair.

I would love for Sam West to play Aziraphale. Just the perfect mixture of handsome and slight pudginess.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In my head-canon, Aziraphale has always looked like Stephen Fry. Anything else just feels...wrong.

...Didn't the book actually make a point of saying he was a fashion disaster? Like...a plaid, 50's style loving type fashion disaster-ish kinda thing? I know they never really described his physical features but...yeah. I also kinda got the impression he was pudgey and frumpy, where Crowley was sharp and kinda lanky. >>;; But that could just be all in my mind.

[identity profile] nota-lone.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! While I like the pretty Az fanart, I see him slightly pudgy, fashion-failed and slightly rumpled looking at all times (the last one is inspired by the wing maintenance quote).

(Anonymous) 2011-05-01 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
If it were possible, I'd cast Anthony Head as Aziraphale. He did the secretly badass, harmless librarian brilliantly in Buffy.

Wha....what is that? Tell me it's a random pic and not some fanart of Aziraphale.

That's probably one reason I don't bother with fandom so much. I dunno, my mental image of Aziraphale will forever be Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Full stop.

Going to be murdered for this, but I imagine him...somewhere in the middle of both interpretations. More "cute" than handsome, but not necessarily *~*bishie*~*. Kind of young-looking.

...I feel really pathetic that I knew the series the prettyboy character you used was from right away.

[identity profile] girlsgottaask.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I always imagined him as an older Peter O'Toole.

don't judge me!!

actually I have no idea why but that's the picture my mind's always given me and that's the one I'm sticking with.

Crowley looks like one of the Blues Brothers...

Keep looking, anon. [livejournal.com profile] lower_tadfield is an excellent place to start. I've gotta admit, your secret had me confused, because the vast majority of pictures of Aziraphale I've seen have portrayed him as a frumpy, pudgy fashion disaster on wings. Very few portray him as a prettyboy. Well. I've seen quite a lot from the 'old days', back in Eden, where he's portrayed as lithe and lovely, but weren't all angels? XD Anyway, usually these artists do draw him with some chub under his tartan sweatervests in modern day.
