Even bad works can be inspirational. Doesn't mean you like it. More than likely you're just going "I know I can do that way better than that book did."

Agreed. I have pretty much the same relationship with The Inheritance Cycle. It's okay to hate your inspiration, anon! Just as long as you love YOUR work.

+1

Sometimes, nothing is quite so inspiring as something that didn't quite live up to its potential.

Oh man, it's a super-ridiculous book but for some reason I actually bought it, even though I can't say, even now, years later, whether or not I actually liked it. I don't think I did. I just had all of his other books and am a stickler for having complete sets of stuff.

Hate is an attracting force, like love. Loathing is when something repels you. It's hard to get an object of hate out of one's head.

Yep, this.

it's not his best work, but even the shittiest thing written by BEE has a way of sticking with you. fuck, Lunar Park was ridiculous, but I flip through it sometimes because there are some paragraphs in there that are just astounding. don't be ashamed of the stuff that inspires you. just roll with it!

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
This! I actually consider him one of my favorite authors exactly because his style seems to have the power to keep you reading even when he's actually talking about nothing.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one that actually liked this book? I thought it was a great story...

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I kept trying to parse the second part of the title as "-Obama". This amuses me.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
YES ME TOO

[identity profile] fisher-queen.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I was forced to read this in my lit program and it nearly killed me. What was worse was that our prof took extreme pleasure in reading the graphic sexual scenes out loud, as if he relished them. Cool guy, but that seriously skeeved me out. I don't see anything wrong with using a book you don't like as inspiration. Just a way of determining what you want to do differently and why.

[identity profile] captain-rex.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They put that book in your lit program? Personally I wouldn't find that overly pleasant to analyze..

[identity profile] ladderax.livejournal.com 2011-05-29 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you. One of my major sources of inspiration is Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, which I found repetitive and melodramatic and kind of sadistic at the time I was reading it. And I would've sworn that it would have absolutely no bearing on my life.

But there was something about his exposition and characters that I found really helpful for giving my novel structure. It's not always just the loathing that can be inspirational--sometimes there's something about the book that you just feel like you need to repurpose or riff on.
