draw because you want to, not because you want internet popularity.

alternatively, you could try doing some original work instead and taking classes to improve. you won't get much recognition for it unless you're extremely lucky, but taking a break from doing fandom work and focusing on other things may help you find something much more fulfilling.

I was unaware being a BNF had anything to do with talent

This.

I don't understand how the BNFs get to be BNFs. They are pretty raunchy people, imo, and lack so much talent...yet people gush over their work and say otherwise.

The secret to success isn't talent or hard work. It's a combination of two things: prolificness and humor. Humor has broader appeal than angst or serious art. If something is genuinely funny, then some people are going to like it regardless of how badly its drawn. Look at xkcd. If it makes them laugh, there's a greater chance that they'll show their friends. Try working from that angle.

While this advice is true enough (humor = easy popularity), I think it is much harder to write a genuine good comedy than it is to write a tragedy. Humor is really subjective, while it's generally not that hard to figure out what makes people sad.

Maybe try doing things for your fandom that are more up your alley? Idk, I'm firmly set in the 'traditionally creative' corner of my fandom, but I have a huge respect for the wonderful ladies and gentlemen who organize events, moderate communities, do podcasts, translate content and express their passion in 25345821 different ways. I can't speak for the whole of my fandom, but I pay attention to those people, I recognize them and I am truly thankful for their work.

Just.. Draw because you want to.
Honestly, if you have a few regulars that look at your work, it's more meaningful than having hundreds of (basically) the same comment from hundreds of different people.

So figure out what you are good at. idk

(Anonymous) 2011-05-06 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you've been at it for years, but that time put in doesn't necessarily translate to quality. And even if you're technically adept, maybe your output isn't very consistent or lacks a point of view.
