it was actually the opposite for me. i've always hated my nose, and sort of wanted a nose job, but for some reason, quinn's storyline made me really really want one. i think i'm doin it rong.

If you're still young, you might want to wait. The nose keeps growing and changing even well into your twenties, so if you do it while young, your nose will end up all weird years later.

I sort of...didn't get the point of the episode. Was Quinn supposed to have not changed her appearance? B-because I don't think there's anything wrong with not wanting to get made fun of, not being overweight is healthier, etc. It seems like the pros outweighed the cons?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. A,d what bothered me too was Emma's storyline. "Well, you weren't born this way, so hey...go pop a pill"'

[identity profile] arostine.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I also didn't get why she kept saying she wasn't "born this way" with regard to the OCD (I mean, other than just name-dropping the song). Like, what if if she HAD shown obsessive compulsive tendencies from childhood? Are we supposed to think she should have NOT sought treatment even if she'd wanted it?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly I'm disturbed with the immediately prescribing medication for OCD (while therapy also helps). Mostly this is because of personal experience. I once use to teach a little girl who was pretty much drugged up because she had OCD, those meds have heavy side effect (like, it affected her growth). While she was kicking the meds she was actually experiencing withdrawl like a junkie, and after that she was generally a happier, more rounded person. So I'm sort of not a fan of the message there.

[identity profile] emmybuns696.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that she probably shouldn't have been immediately prescribed something, but she genuinely had a miserable life. She spent almost a whole hour obsessively cleaning her therapist's chair before sitting down; that kind of OCD isn't easily fixed without anti-anxiety medication. Yes, that shit has side effects (I've been on Zoloft), but some people DO ultimately need it. I think Emma could really benefit from being on medication; all meds aren't evil, they exist for a reason.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying no medication should be prescribed EVER. But it sort of bothers me it was done after 5 minutes of conversation and not attempting therapy AT ALL before doing so. But I concede this might just be my personal issue with meds.

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pills can also save people's life and I'm really glad they showed her taking them. There is so much stigma around psych medication including myths that they're the worse thing ever and it's a really good message to show kids out there that having a mental illness is serious and that taking medication can really help.

Emma is not a child and your experiences =/= the whole truth.

[identity profile] ceruleansan.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
This. For a second I was afraid she was going to put the pill aside and go "No, that's not right!" and I'm really glad they had her take it because of the stigma. Once in a while Glee does something right.

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly! I was so scared of that too, because it would be a very Glee thing to do. Medication isn't for everyone, but when the illness is screwing with your life the way Emma's is then it's certainly worth a try.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying Emma is that child. I'm bothered by the ease of prescribing medication that can have pretty heavy side effect.

Ia. I'll promote self confidence and acceptance before anything else. But I don't think it's right to shame people for having plastic surgery.

jewish noses are hot

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
this, really. I have the smallest nose in my family, I do not like that fact. I really want to steal my sister's giant roman nose, it's so cool.

[identity profile] yuping.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I find it really difficult to feel beautiful.
Yeah, I think this is a big part of it. If you don't like a certain aspect of yourself, it's hard to believe others when they try to convince you otherwise.

I'm glad that this made you feel better about yourself though :)

People don't just say "you should be a model" for the hell of it. They probably think you're really really pretty. Just take it for what it is and stop doubting.

Glad you found Glee helpful.

Every once in a while they get something right, TBH. It's easy to just say the show is ALWAYS OFFENSIVE AND STUPID OMG because it certainly is sometimes, but it also has some nice moments with sensible messages.
