I do think introducing a character the way she as introduced is risky because it can alienate the viewers.

Only if they're a woman. Otherwise that ~smug~ attitude would be ~snarky and cute.~

This is, alas, also true. I would like to imagine that it is mostly, as _thirty2flavors was saying, a mater of perspective, of not beign in on the joke, and I still think that, in fandom, it's 50% that. Unfortunately, I think it's probably also a bit of what you're saying, combined with the "in the way of my pairing" reaction.
