The funny thing is, I never knew about race play until I met POC who liked it.

Not saying the fact that I know POC who like it means that most do, or that this means "it's okay" or something. I don't really consider myself qualified to judge that. It's just interesting to me because although SJ types tend to talk about how a white person getting off on playing plantation master is creepy... I heard it first from the other side.

Same with Nazi play. The one person I know who waxes poetic about the hotness of Nazi uniforms is Jewish.

FWIW (probably nothing), I do think this has colored my perspective on it all. If a Jewish person wants to ask someone to put an armband on, I'm not really sure I can jump in and be all "Now Sarah, you know you're not supposed to deal with those demons through role-play, tsk tsk."

Now if someone of German descent told me "I have a shameful secret. I can't get off unless I think about firing up the ovens" I'd probably feel different.

You know, I know several "SJ types" who would agree with you.

Similar political stance != monolithic opinions, although you apparently like to think so.

That is one hundred percent understandable, anon.

It's the perceived difference in what's turning them on there. A Jewish person eroticizing Nazis is taking their own history of oppression and flipping it on its head, turning it into an image of hotness instead of fear, more or less psychologically telling themselves, "This cannot hurt me. I don't have to be afraid of this."

A German eroticizing Nazis seems like they're wanting to call up the adrenaline rush of having that much power over someone- wanting the illicit thrill of being able to pretend they can make a life or death call on someone else. It seems like a glory day revel, not so much taking control of their own pain.

(You can turn that in on itself, though, depending on the context of the fantasy. The Shoah is a painful source of shame for Germany- at what some of their people in the past did, and what a lot of their people in the past allowed to happen. I can't say I'd feel squicked by a German who wanted to put on a Nazi uniform and be flogged bloody by their partner, made to pay for what their ancestors did in a sexualized way.)

...Nazi kink is sort of my berserk button, I've thought about it a lot. :-/

You honestly wouldn't feel squicked if an innocent person believed they deserved brutal punishment for crime they did not commit, just because of their ethnicity?

[identity profile] darlas-mom.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about a sincere belief here, anon. I'm talking about something that is so much a part of a person's culture that they've turned it into kink fuel. I wouldn't be disgusted by a Christian with a masochistic fantasy about roleplaying the Passion with with real whips and nails, either.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But we're talking about the feeling of guilt for an appalling crime. It's not healthy to have innocent people feeling like mass murderers. It shouldn't be encouraged, especially if it's somehow a part of a nation's culture.

[identity profile] darlas-mom.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, we're talking about the eroticization of punishment for an appalling crime. There's a difference.

People eroticizing their own pain is, to some extent, normal. (That extent being "a lot of people find relief and pleasure this way," not "absolutely everyone who has this pain would ETA: or should do this.")
