Yeah. I mean... yes, the Doctor is super special rainbow amazing, absolutely. He is more super special rainbow amazing than anyone else on the show is ever going to be. But we kind of accept that, because he's the lead, and also because we're sort of... with him. He's on our side. River shows up and starts laughing at the Doctor and knowing more than him, but that also means by extension she knows more than the audience and is in some ways laughing at them as well. At least, that's how it felt to me. There's definitely going to be people who just like her for being a snarky bastard and think she is an HBIC right way, but I don't think it's ludicrous to understand that the introduction of a character who is, from the first episode, presented as More Important Than Any Other Companion! when we're presumably already attached to the current companion(s) ...idk, it's going to annoy some people. Besides that, her backwards storyline is unconventional, which makes it risky too.

I am not Moffat's biggest fan, but I will give credit where it is due and say that I think he has done better with River than I anticipated -- I really did not like her at all when she was introduced and I am genuinely very fond of her now. But based on the weird way we met her, I don't think it's crazy that people didn't like her at first.
