I just get depressed when there's hate flung towards the Who ladies, and particular how much of it seems like an attempt to elevate certain ones over the others. They were all very important to the Doctor, after all.

The trend fandom in general has for using one female character to tear down another is just ridiculous. THEY WERE ALL AWESOME AND IMPORTANT!

And they never do it with the men -- they basically never bring up all the mistakes the Doctor makes that result in some of the actions they hate so much from the women. For instance, poor Martha gets so much shit because she pursued Ten even though he wasn't over Rose, but people ignore the fact that he basically told her Rose had dumped him. If he had been straight with her in the first place, she wouldn't have considered him an option. The Doctor messes up all the time, and it impacts his companions.

If you'd like, I could complain about Jack Harkness and how this guy I loved in Doctor Who turned into this guy I hated with a passion on Torchwood until the cows come home.

Meh, I think you could make an argument that Dodo was pretty insignificant. Didn't she just vanish mid-story without explanation? Yeah.
That aside, I have yet to come across a DW companion who I didn't think was awesome, male or female.
