I don't watch Glee, but from what I've gathered, she's supposed to represent fat girls?

I also heard that they don't give Mercedes enough development/storylines. Why not write less for the unlikeable fat character and write more for the likeable fat character?

Well, they could attempt to subvert the sassy fat black chick trope, but I guess that would be too hard.

Sorry, it just frustrates me, because from what I've seen Mercedes is so likeable, talented and beautiful. Why not use her more?

That being said, there's nothing wrong with having a fat white girl on the show too. In fact, it's good to have multiple fat girls on a show so that fat-tokenism is averted. That being said, is there another black girl on the show? I'm genuinely curious. I heard that there used to be a main black male character on the show, but he mysteriously disappeared. Am I wrong?

Why not? She's fabulous At least what I've seen of the two. I don't watch it, say "religiously", but I do watch it as often as I can, so...

That's true... I guess I just don't like the one they're giving all the screen time to since I "should" like her because I "should" ID with her. I don't. (I also don't think that I really "should", but I've been told that I "should", ya know?)

There used to be another black boy on the show, but he was more of a secondary character and had like 3 lines the entire second half of the season.

Yeah, it kind of sucked because both he and the Asian boy were football players who were good at dancing so they decided to join Glee Club, but apparently the producers decided to expand Mike Chang's role, while Matt only got screentime in the dance numbers. Rumour is that the actor who played him was really disappointed by the lack ofcharacter development and screen time--not even just individually, but he just wanted something to do, a subplot or involvement in a storyline, and nothing happened, so he decided to leave the show.

It was such a shame too, he was a cutie

No, Mercedes is the only "main" black character on the show. There used to be a background dancer in season 1 who was on the football team and in glee but he never had any lines. There is one of the bullies that's black but he rarely pops up or gets lines.

And I too would love to see more Mercedes storylines. Especially ones that don't revolve around food or out divaing Rachel. She's totally underused and she has the best voice on the show.

I think think they've offended every black fat viewer with Mercedes' sassy black attitude. I rolled my eyes so hard at that "no weave" bullshit.

I suppose the makers wanted to move onto offending the white fat viewers :(

I've been wondering that too - everyone seems to love Lauren (me, I'm just wondering when she'll buy some trendy glasses that complement her face) and ignores Mercedes.

Mind you, if they'd decided to develop Mercedes more she'd probably turn unpleasant too, instead of just stereotypical.

OMG, THIS, so much. I LOVE Mercedes. Loved her from the beginning. But she has nothing to do on the show, no story, no character development, no screen time. I want to watch her fall in love and have a boy chasing after her, not this mean spirited bully who beat up Santana,humiliated Quinn and stood up Puck.

Oh hello can you tell me where you archived this story?

Benjamin Bratt is coming to McKinley for a week to help Santana and the Glee club with a musical production of Piñero. Santana is too wrapped up in her Brit business to be around much for what goes on behind the scenes, which leaves Benjamin stuck with Kurt to show him around and go over the minutes. Kurt's had secretly had a crush on him since he was five, and has all his dvds hidden somewhere where other people keep their porn. Blaine, of course, does not understand and stands dapper but befuddled on the sidelines. Having discovered that Benjamin's kind is for au naturel, Kurt stops shaving his pits and legs, and tries not to shower more than once every two days.

Not to be rude but, well, no she's not supposed to represent you.

She's a character who happens to be larger than the rest of the cast. Bigger people can be just as rude as thinner people.

): Sorry for being so snappy with you! I've been in arguments with a lot of people who seemed to think that just because she's bigger means that she needs to be the most moral of a person, and I too quickly assumed that's what you were saying.

No, I really don't think she should be more moral... It's when people (in RL, not here) tell me that I "should" want to be like her because we both:

- Are white (looking for her- if there's something refuting that, I missed it and I apologize) (actually white for me)
- Wear glasses
- Are female
- Are overweight.

And that's it. And than she goes and does something like this, and....

I dunno, there DOES certainly seem to be a trend with making fat or less conventionally attractive characters bitchy. It's sort of 'ugly stepsister' syndrome - it makes it ok that she's 'ugly' because she's 'ugly inside' too.

I'm getting sick of the two tropes of 'ugly' characters either being Quasimodo or Cinderella's Stepsister. We're not just nice or just mean all the time.
