OP never called her mom homophobic, and maybe her mom would have said "ew" if it was an older, heavier woman instead of the older, heavier man BUT... I would find it really rude if I heard someone say "ew" about two unattractive people kissing as well. I don't find it sexy thats fine, neither do I, and yeah I might be tempted to look away for a bit, but "ew" can be a really uncharitable thing to say. Its no excuse for the OP to lose respect for her mom, but its not exactly admirable either.

Oh get over yourself. It's not like her mother went up to someone and said "ew" she said it in the comfort of her own home in front of a television.

Huh? Its still an uncharitable thing to say, and her daughter witnessed it, so of course that will bring her a moment of pause. Plain and simple. Even if its "in the comfort of your own home" if it is within earshot of anyone, prepare to have others judge you for it. If I was walking with a friend and she whispered that two unattractive people kissing were "disgusting" or "ew" I would be put off as well, even if I was the only one to hear her.

Don't like it? Then keep those thoughts to yourself. When you get off the internet and into the real world, shooting your mouth off like that will only get you into trouble.

That being said, I do think that extra understanding should be extended when its your own mother, plus of course the OP is hardly an example of stunning social conduct herself saying "hot".

I don't know, I don't really see a problem with someone voicing their opinion in secret. As long as the people in question don't hear, then who cares? People are people. They can be mean sometimes. They can be rude sometimes. But eh, we're all human and we all say silly things every now and then. I'm not going to begrudge someone just because they thought something was "ew" instead of insert-word-here.

Yes nothing wrong with thinking something in secret as long as we don't allow these thoughts to consume us or to affect our behavior, but of course the daughter heard. I don't think ugly words only affect those directly involved at all. They really aren't pleasant to hear for anyone, trust me--maybe the daughter is close friends with older or heavier people, for example, or maybe she just has more empathy than her mother (or maybe she has an older heavier male fetish and thinks the same scene is "hot"...and welp).

I have to work for a doctor who is constantly talking about the "stupid" people who come in his office for one thing or another, talking shit about the elderly, the overweight, those of different ethnic backgrounds, the working class, etc. Do they ever hear? No. Does it really hurt my opinion of his character, especially his understanding and charitableness? Yes, to the point where I outright dislike him.

I think there's a very large difference between someone constantly belittling others and someone having a one-word kneejerk reaction to something.
