Complete Agreement

Many of the other commenters suggested that the 'ew' may have resulted from the guys' physical appearance. I looked at the pic, and you know what, they didn't look that bad or that old. Besides, disgust at love is not a good thing. So yeah... I'm on your side, anon. Finding gays hot is better than looking at them with disgust, I figure, provided that one doesn't steorotype them, solely consider them to be sex objects or be homophobic (apparently, some slash fans are homophobic. I consider that a contradictation of epic proportions).

I'm disappointed in the majority of the comments I see here. Who said only conventionally attractive folks should be allowed to show socially accepted affection? I don't care what either person looks like, if I happen to witness an affectionate moment, I'm likely to be all "aww" about it.

Precisely! That's what I was saying, distilled to its very essence. :D You're so brilliant!

Glad to see I'm not alone! :D

It's Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. So I imagine that is where a lot of the 'ewww' comments are coming from.

What? Will Ferrel/John C. Reilly = ew? Did I miss a newsflash? XD

[identity profile] unknown20troper.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't get the 'ew,' though. Yes, they are comedians and the kiss may have just been done for controversy and humour (but why? Was it even on their show? Do they get paid to cause controversy? [They must be raking the dough right now, if that's correct. XD] My mind just can't see it as anything but honest, even though they apparently aren't gay.)

Re: What? Will Ferrel/John C. Reilly = ew? Did I miss a newsflash? XD

Considering the dislike many people have for Will Ferrel and both mens' general attitude towards gays and gay jokes, I'm not surprised people thought this was icky.

This Changes Things

[identity profile] unknown20troper.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... they're homophobic, right? Now that's a game-changer... You know, I think this is a complex issue. It's not one with a sharp line dividing good and bad. We don't even know what they were doing or why they were doing it and we all make our own interpretations. Yet, I will not stand for kissing being considered disgusting because of gender, sexuality, age or anything like that. People should be able to love who they love, in their own way. I'm not saying that these two love each other; I am saying that you should not assume the worst about a kiss or the kissers. Get past the 'ew' and try to see the issue clearly.

I don't know if I'd call them homophobic, but they certainly seem to have the mindset that "gayness" is something funny that can deserves to be laughed at.

To be fair, is there anything that these guys think isn't fair game for mocking?

I went "ew" because I hate Will Ferrel and I don't find JCR attractive whatsoever. And those two aren't gay. Knowing Ferrel it was done for the lulz.

Re: Complete Agreement

[identity profile] unknown20troper.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's the people? Well, I'd understand if Hitler was one of them, but he isn't and I don't think any equivalents of him are in that pairing. (Sorry about Godwin's Law.)

And they aren't gay? As in, they aren't that specific sexuality or they just don't like men that way? There's quite a bit of difference between not being gay and being straight or asexual. Besides, should we really even know about the private lives of celebs? (That's a rhethorical question. I haven't found the answer, though I don't pay attention to that stuff. I only commented because the 'ew' bothered me and seemed out of proportion.)

For the lulz? Ferrel would do it for the lulz? Kinda works, but that brings up a pertinent question: would Reilly also do it for the lulz - or at all? 'Cause kissing is not an one man/woman act. It involves two people. So yeah... what Ferrel would do does matter, but you can't disregard Reilly.

And after saying all this, I still don't think 'ew' is the best reaction. There are other, better ways to respond to people engaging in homosexual behavior, for or not for the lulz.

Re: Complete Agreement

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I'm guessing you're not too familiar with the sort of work and comedy Will Ferrel and JCR do?

Re: Complete Agreement

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-05-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
They would both do it for the lulz and for the attention--their preferred method of "comedy" is to act really stupid (no really, basically, to act like giant man-children) for two hours in a "normal" setting and pretend it's hilarious. That's not engaging in homosexual behavior, they're engaging in a parody of homosexual behavior.

I went "ew" because I just don't like kissing very much. Sorry. ^^;

Plus there's something up with JCR's face that I just can't get over in this pic.... Sorry. ^^'

Re: Complete Agreement

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for crying out... It's "ewwww" for me (and many others it seems) because it's kissing and kissing is squicky and disgusting no matter what genitals the participants possess.

Re: Complete Agreement

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus Christ. Ya'll aren't doing a good job of proving that fandom is full of sexually repressed teens who act like 5-year olds or the mentally ill. Because the only reasons to think kissing is 'gross' are:

1. you are a child
2. you are OCD person who obsesses over how many germs are transmitted via kissing

It's an incredibly normal thing. It is you who are the weird ones here.

Re: Complete Agreement

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, by "It's an incredibly normal thing", I meant kissing is, not thinking that kissing is 'squicky', that's just fucking weird.

3. You just aren't into kissing.

I don't think it is wrong to be apart from the norm; not caring for sex or kissing doesn't make your intelligence or social skills suffer at all. Now, I don't care if other people kiss, I just don't want to. I support people who love each other no matter what their genders are and believe they have a right to lovemaking and PDA and whatnot, but I don't have to find them hot. Normality is not necessary. :)

Re: Complete Agreement

(Anonymous) 2011-05-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's possible to believe that kissing is just dandy and that everyone who wants to should do it, and that expressions of love are wonderful at any age, while still having a negative visceral reaction to seeing two particular individuals kissing.
