tone counts, all the time. there's a difference, however, between "ew, gay people, I find that morally gross." or "ew, gay kissing, not attracted to that at ALL."

the latter is perfectly okay. you can't really control what you're sexually repulsed by, in the same way you can't control what you're sexually attracted to. you can limit yourself to not expressing yourself in ways dangerous to yourself and others, and that's about it.

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt.

tl;dr you're not a better person if you get off to sex that a populational minority has.

When Vito Spatafore was kissing his male lover in The Soprano I couldn't even look at the TV. Not because they were both men, but because that poor man was the opposite of sexy and it was obvious that both actors felt very uncomfortable with the kiss. So you can say "ew" while watching two guys kissing and it doesn't always mean that you're homophobic.

Yeah it is very rude to say "Ew" even if the two people kissing ARE conventionally old/unattractive. I think its equally rude (and a little creepy) to say "Hot" though, so just shake hands with your mom and call it even, ok?

Echoing what others have said - maybe she just doesn't like seeing anyone kissing? Maybe it's the... less-than-conventional attractiveness of the men. Maybe she didn't think it was an appropriate venue. Maybe, just maybe, she has no problem with homosexuality but just doesn't find it a turn-on when men kiss?

There are many reasons she could have said 'ew'. Did you ask, or just silently judge and condemn?

It seems you guys have a lot more faith in people than I do, because I really don't think it's unreasonable to assume OP's mother's comment was fueled by homophobia. In my experiences, most openly negative reactions to gay couples showing affection are.

That said, OP, I really hope everyone else is right and your mom isn't homophobic. Or at least doesn't start shaming you for what you find 'hot.'

Many of the other commenters suggested that the 'ew' may have resulted from the guys' physical appearance. I looked at the pic, and you know what, they didn't look that bad or that old. Besides, disgust at love is not a good thing. So yeah... I'm on your side, anon. Finding gays hot is better than looking at them with disgust, I figure, provided that one doesn't steorotype them, solely consider them to be sex objects or be homophobic (apparently, some slash fans are homophobic. I consider that a contradictation of epic proportions).

I hate that it's always a gay couple that gets this ew reaction. Older hetero couples kiss all the time and no one bats an eye. Either they let it go as neutral or they think it's cute that a couple is still in love with each other after all those years.
