What I want to know is why they couldn't make a game about the French resistance where you play as, oh, I don't know, an actual French person.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Or if they were going have you play as an Irishman, hire an Irish voice actor instead of a Londoner who lives in the US and seems to be doing his best to sound like a chain-smoker from Delaware.

The answer to your question is easy, of course - who would want to play one of the cheese-eating surrender monkeys? /sarcasm

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, Jesus. Some of the voice acting was painful, though Skylar was most definitely the worst. Her VA derserves to stand on a whole lot of Lego hidden in a deceptively soft fireside rug for that performance.

Ah, the French! How did the citizens of a country with such a violent, bloody national anthem get such a bad reputation? I've got a book called "Les jeunes et la Résistance" which might as well be titled "Stone Cold Badasses who fought the Nazis as teenagers. Reader, you're a wimp".

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't played the game yet; I've only endured that one cutscene.

In the defense of those who propagate that reputation, holding out against the invasion for a day less than Poland despite having immeasurably more modern weaponry and even allied assistance probably has a lot to do with it. But that probably has more to do with not realizing how much the nature of war had changed between WWI and WWII.

I think the rest has to do with the fact that France used to be Europe's Big Bad. What with Napoleon conquering most of it and absolutely rocking on England and Germany and Spain in turns throughout the Middle Ages. It's more shocking and leaves a much more lasting impression to see the big kid on the playground fall over and start crying than any other kid who might have done the same if they had to resist the blitzkrieg. It sort of cements the notion that "hey, he wasn't so tough after all" in one's mind.

Also, while I can't speak for the rest of the whole, I know that in North America one of the first things we ever learn about France is that they surrendered to the Germans, twice, and sat and spun while the Allies bailed them out, twice. We don't learn anything about the resistance unless we go looking for it. /serious answer

The game's actually quite fun. Just block your ears when the blonde "British" woman comes on screen. That's Skylar. (Oh, and if you do play it, make sure your computer's processor is up to scratch, because driving will be painful if it isn't. Sideswipe a single Nazi vehicle and you are toast.)

Good points there - I hadn't considered those. And thought I'm not the best person to ask about history education in the UK (I dropped the subject when I was 14 because it was that or drop Geography and my mother was a geography teacher) I remember learning about the French resistance, not in school... but through fanfiction. Seriously. I used to be into Les Miserables fandom and I found an AU where the students who were in a political group in the original were a Resistance moment in WWII. Fandom does do some good, after all.

Mind you, you'd think you'd at least get a bit about Charles de Gaulle.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd meant to - I have a number of games on my backlog, unfortunately, but I will.

I've learned any number of things because fandom inspired me to do research. There's that whole Extra Credits episode on tangential learning - definitely rings true for me. But no, we learned absolutely nothing about the resistance. Just the major battles. Can't speak for anyone else because they're not on the curriculum here in BC, Canada. Not even Charles de Gaulle.

...Though I feel almost like we're letting the poor nonnies down at this point, so.... not enough black people in the game (I haven't played) was there! Does it even pass the Bechdel Test????

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That really surprises me, considering that de Gaulle was important enough to meet FDR and Churchill and such people.

Well, honestly, I was very, very disappointed that there were absolutely no black disabled lesbian résistantes in this game. I mean honestly!!!1!

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It surprised me too, but then you've got a limited amount of time in a classroom, and obviously the focus was going to be on Canadian actions during the war. I suspect it's the same anywhere.

Excuse me, I think you mean black differently-abled lesbians.

(...Seriously though, the below is all infantile grudgewank from someone who recently defriended me. That should bring it all into context in case you were wondering how and why VA!fail = OMG SJ BRIGADE. Oh, internet.)

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I have heard that the French and the Germans learn a lot more about it - obviously. (In Germany Hans and Sophie Scholl appear to have reached near-saturation.)

Black differently-abled lesbians! They can't walk, but they can shoot flames out of their fingertips!

Wow, some people really can't let go. I'm still unclear what bad VA has to do with SJ... should I even try to think of a connection?

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Growing up in Germany must be fascinating, at least as far as war history is concerned. I've been involved in public school instruction in Japan, and it's equally fascinating (what we learn as "imperialist propaganda about why Japan went to war" they learn as "why Japan went to war"; also, a-bombs).

But that's violent. The black differently-abled lesbians win the hearts and minds of Nazis through polite discussion.

The same way someone agreeing with me and complimenting my icon is me "brown-nosing" them, I suspect. (In other words, it's not. It's just petulance.)

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have travelled quite a bit around Germany and they are open about the war and the atrocities. I don't think I've seen a historical museum (or any other type, for that matter) there that wasn't detailed and well-done.

Oh yes. S'more like it: the differently-melaninised, differently-abled, differently-oriented resistance members should take a packet of M&S Rich Tea biscuits and some organically-grown fairtrade green tea around to Gestapo HQ and respectfully request that all this nastiness stop. Except it isn't like that at all! It's all bombs and guns and punching cows to death* and violent masculine posturing! How can this possibly stand??!!

*You can literally reduce a cow to a pile of bloody flesh in this game by punching it three or four times. The developers got bored.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My relatives are from Germany, so all I know about it is from them, and the ones who lived through it don't really talk about the war >_> I'd love to go see it.

...You can punch cows to death. Well, that's it, I'm sold.

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I went to visit the KZ-Gedenkstaette at Neuengamme (near Hamburg) last summer, and ended up spending much more time there than I'd expected because there was this whole room of folders with the stories of people who were prisoners there - as well as all the other exhibits. It was well worth going.

The thing is that no matter what you choose to do to the cows - punch them, shoot them, run them over with a tank - they just moo and explode into a pile of perfectly butchered cuts. I saw an LP where the LPers systematically executed every cow in a field this way.
