[Zork Nemesis]

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a wee lass, I couldn't sleep with the light on because I was afraid I would be eaten by a grue.

On a less silly note, I should play Nemesis again, because all I have are dim memories of a hedge maze. And being lost in said hedge maze. FOREVER.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
with the light OFF**. Shush, it's almost 2am here.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think you may have it mixed up with Return to Zork. That one had a hedge maze which was a royal pain in the can to get lost in, with a singing tree and a blind bowman a giant fucking spider (MOMMY!).

Nemesis was the one with the creepy temple and the dead evil alchemists.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
...then perhaps I've never played Nemesis? Hah, Grand Inquisitor is the only one I've actually played since I was about 7. Clearly this is a sign that I need to start again.

[identity profile] subversive-kiwi.livejournal.com 2011-05-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
OH MAN, ZORK GRAND INQUISITOR IS MY FAVORITE! I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN TO SQUEE ABOUT IT TO ANYONE OTHER THAN MY IMMEDIATE FAMILY!!(sorry about the all caps... I have a lot of feelings, haha.)

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-05-15 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
ME TOO BB, ME TOO. IT WAS LIKE MY CHILDHOOD. AND THEN I PLAYED IT AGAIN AND COULD STILL REMEMBER HOW TO SOLVE ALL THE PUZZLES AND IT WAS 100x FUNNIER BECAUSE I GOT ALL THE JOKES.
I still tell people that they gained 86 experience points and found a healing potion. So far, no-one has understood. :(
I need to get round to buying a new version because my discs are buggered and won't load past the prison. Sad times.

[identity profile] subversive-kiwi.livejournal.com 2011-05-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
AWWW MAN, I WANTED TO GO AS THE SIX ARMED INVISIBLE BRIDGE GUY FOR HALLOWEEN ONE YEAR WHEN I WAS LITTLE, UNTIL MY DAD POINTED OUT THAT A) IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE, AND B) NOBODY WOULD KNOW WHO I WAS. I also used to joke about totemizing people ("a very bad thing!") and not being a real adventurer, just playing one on TV. Alas, the people at my college are culturally deprived. It is so good to hear someone else talk about it! *clings*

Good luck in your search for a new copy! I don't know if there are any around that will play on modern computer systems, but carry on, brave soldier!

Forgive me for butting in...

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Grand Inquisitor doesn't seem to be in here (http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue#all_genres/search/zork/), but it's a start?
Btw, I've never played the games but I'd like to... should I start from Zork 1 and then... what? Or are there better entry points to the series?

(and gosh, i was going for a Myst icon as they're all I have, but... your username. *stares* It is pretty.)

Forgive me frothing at the mouth, I am a rabid stan

[identity profile] subversive-kiwi.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I think that Grand Inquisitor is the ideal starting point to the series... The earliest games are type-based and a lot of fun, but there is just something about the combination of fabulous storyline, clever and complex gameplay, and nice graphics (for 1997) that makes it my favorite Zork game by a wide margin. It was also the adventure game that defined my whole childhood, so I may be a little biased...

If you like Myst, you run, not walk, and get yourself in a moving vehicle tostart looking for Zork Grand Inquisitor immediately! I would describe the game as "Myst, but with a wacky sense of humor" which lapses into teasing of D&D geekery, and with touches of Terry Pratchett-type genius. People have compared it to Monkey Island, as well. Some things you will get to do include: bypassing a security system by getting it drunk, fight the evil government by committing random acts of arson, and shove an inflatable raft up a dragon's nose. If I remember correctly, there is also a way to die that gets you exiled to "a terrible place called New Jersey."

This should help you install it on a modern system:

Will do, will do! Definitely looking forward to getting a security system drunk. Thanks a lot for the links and geekery! :D

I'm a rabid Myst stan, actually, but I can do humour despite my 6 favourite games being all srsbsns and not having a single joke in them. I've just finished Monkey Island and Grim Fandango for the first time and loved them! Pratchett is always a good sign and so is D&D. Yay!

YOUR SWORD'S BLOWING GLUE!
I always liked the bridge guy. Always wondered what he looked like.
Oh man, have totally just ordered a new copy from Amazon. Now to sit by my pigeonhole like some oversized vulture ready to accost the postman!

Man, I feel like I've been enabling gamers left and right on this thread. SUCCESS! I hope you have a great time when it arrives. :)

Holy crap, Zork Nemesis secret?

Yeah, the asylum scenes were pretty messed up.

"It's looking glass time!"

"BRACE yourself!"

I jumped. And screamed like a little girl.

*SHUDDER*

[identity profile] merriman.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I played that game with my boyfriend in his office. He worked at a little start-up and the office was in a converted warehouse and it was after hours.

Not the most comforting of spaces when doing the asylum section!

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I would've shut it off and hidden in a corner and not come out for a week.

Also, the cadaver's head hitting on you asdfghjkl;

And not just with the Asylum. The talking torture room in Irondune... *WHIMPER*

Re: OP here

[identity profile] merriman.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
The whole game is creepy, but that's half the point, really. I loved it, even if it wasn't much of a Zork game specifically.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to agree there. Return to Zork had its creepy moments, but it was overall the same kind of lighthearted, dorky humor that the franchise is famous for. And I'm glad they went back to that with Grand Inquisitor. But Nemesis was, for its time, a nice little change-off experiment.

Though I could've lived a nice, comfortable life without watching Lauren Koslow and Stephen Macht make out in a bathtub *squicked*

Re: OP here

[identity profile] merriman.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Grand Inquisitor was definitely a return to the roots.

You know what I'd love to see now? A Zork game done Portal style.

...Would we get a Weighted Companion Brass Lantern perhaps? Because damned if that thing isn't your best friend in the Empire.

Re: OP here

[identity profile] merriman.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
That would be fab. And a grue saying "I see you!"

This is amazing. I thought I was the only one who still remembers this game.

socreepy

It seems like everyone thought we were alone in our Zork nerddom! But judging by this thread, there are at least five of us on the wide seas of the internets. :D
