I thought he deserved his fate. The only reason he thought to apologize is because he was taken from his position of power and given, well, eternity to think about his actions.

I found him endearing and adorable but that doesn't excuse the stuff he did to Chell. :(

i think wheatley is cute and all, but he definitely got what he deserved

It's pretty awesome to be able to have Alternate Character Interpretations since there hasn't been any official word from Valve on if he was sincere(he probably won't be until he's had a good, long think about it). Besides, I ship Chell and evil!Wheatley. It's just so fun; even when he's got all the power in the world, he still can't do anything right. It's fun to dangle that above his...head? Her outsmarting him at every turn makes my girly parts say "YAY~!"

[identity profile] kaatsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Wheatley actually is contrite. He potentially has learned an actual lesson – he’s up in space and relatively sad. [...] He’s sincere, he’s sorry! He’s floating in friggin space for christ’s sake! And he even makes a point to say ‘and not just because I’m floating in space!’ [pause] He may not be sincere. [...] Personally I think he’s sincere – there’s authorial intent versus people’s interpretation of it. I think he genuinely does feel sorry for all the trouble he caused.

WOOT! This pleases me greatly, thank ye kindly! A nice Wheatley is good too. :3

I was just about to look for that. Thanks for doing the work for me. XD

Wheatley did definitely seem to be selfishly motivated at the beginning, but being attached to GLaDOS's body also changed him noticeably; he wasn't entirely himself when he was being evil. (Remember, we know it messes with their brain circuits by at least creating a test addiction and possibly more.)

Which isn't to say he's totally innocent or anything, but it's not as if he was just a dick the whole time.

That said, I did think his fate felt appropriate at the end of the game. Letting him off scot-free wouldn't have been right either.

Dude, he's stranded out in space with space core.

I would not wish that that on anyone.

SPPPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

[identity profile] x-saria.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
He definitely got what he deserved.

Wait, there are people who think that Wheatley was just being *exceptionally nice* to Chell for shits and giggles and not to get out of Aperture? Huh ...

The creators pointed out that he was sincere in his apology, though. So at the end he probably saw her as a person instead of just an object for his escape. There's some odd things he says in his babbling during the boss fight as well.

[identity profile] billybobfred0.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
As final punishments go, it's not even that bad. He's still alive, he's not alone (the quality of space core as company notwithstanding), and he's probably in orbit around the Earth, so if he has solar panels (and being designed by Aperture Science, he probably does, despite their complete uselessness in his intended operating environment) he doesn't need to worry about running out of power and dying that way. And he probably won't be stuck in space forever anyway.

Given all that, I really can't say the writers circumstance punished him unfairly.

[identity profile] megabluelove.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really surprising. Yeah he needed help to get out, so did she. They helped each other to try to get out, yea he did have some bad ideas but he was built to make bad choices.. doesn't mean he was manipulating her (manipulation would normally takes more smarts than he had). A lot of people agree getting attached to glados's body changed him for the worse. His AI just like a person, has its good side and bad side. The power fed on his bad side and corrupted him. Outside of that I think him and Chell were becoming friends, as people tend to latch on to each other in dire situations.

I apologize for this rambling here

[identity profile] otaku-attack.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
I...am very indecisive on how I feel about Wheatley.

I do think he needed to be punished, but...you gotta remember, he didn't have very much control over his actions since being attached to Glados' body was messing with his thoughts. Just think for a minute--twist the mind and force an addiction to science and testing onto something that was specifically built to make poor decisions: OF COURSE IT'S GOING TO MAKE BAD SHIT HAPPEN. What if you were attached to a machine that screwed you up a bit mentally and caused you to do horrible things--which, are things you would NEVER normally do under any other circumstance and you had no knowledge that this was going to happen to you beforehand, would you accept being launched into space to drift for a very long time (essentially, basically subjecting yourself to the same fate you had before meeting Chell---being alone for hundreds of years with only defective machines for company) as a suitable punishment for something that was beyond your control?

In fact, when he first attaches himself to the body and brings the escape pod up, if you stop and listen before going inside it, he actually says other things like "Oh wait, this body is too big to fit in the lift...oh I got it, all I gotta do is detach myself from here and then I can fit into the lift with you!", so he had every intention of still wanting to help you escape and want to come with you to the surface before the powertrip screwed him up. Plus, the creators did say that his apology at the end was sincere, so...

I think in the end, everything that happened to him was the result of bad-decision making all around and one stupid mistake of thinking that doing something like that was a good idea to get himself and Chell out of a horrible situation and that, really, everyone is at fault in some way for how things turned out, not just pushing all of the blame onto Wheatley.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
What I don't understand is why he appears to be floating at the end. He should be falling back to the lunar surface - I don't think the explosive decompression was powerful enough to kick him (and Space Core) into orbit around either the Moon or Earth.

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
i think he's too dumb to deserve his fate lol

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
He deserved his fate.

SPOILERY COMMENTS.

Mostly, he's not even dead. He's just stuck in space. They might even bring him back if they want.In any case, he needs to stay as far away from the facility (and humanity) as possible.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, he deserved it. I did feel a little bad for him, but it was sort of lost in the overwhelming lust I'd developed for GLaDOS at that point.
