Assuming that the bnf did really say "it's not rape when they fall in love" then it's not kink shaming but a necessary reality check for this person. This trope is not okay neither should it be!

I don't know who you're talking about, but if you are being honest and not exaggerating to hell and back, I understand. This seems to be a problem in a lot of fandoms (meaning crap=popular fic) and the only way I tolerate it is by not writing fic, and thus not falling into a jealous rage. :-)

I do agree it can be overdone. I still think it's a perfectly healthy, harmless outlet for natural curiosities, but I suppose OOC is never good and reading ONLY that sort of thing is...well, weird.

I'm going to have to agree. Just because a BNF writes it, doesn't mean it needs to be instantly recced in every fandom-climber's journal.

Like another secret poster above, I'm also sick to death of people using the kink-shaming excuse to justify defending this kind of stuff. Own your kinks. That's fine. But don't try and make it into some fluffy fairytale romance that it's not.

Yeah, BNFs can get a lot more leeway for their writing, unless they start to eat their own. And then they never get the end of it.

I'm really starting to think that the whole "kink shaming" phenomenon is just a big excuse for people to do/say/write wildly offensive things.

Take all the stuff that gets labeled in fandom as "kink," and that therefore no one is allowed to criticize, stick it in a TV show, movie, or published book, and how do people in fandom react to it? "Holy shit, that's terrible! Misogyny! Racism! Transphobia! Homophobia! Ableism! Ageism! WTF!" But we must accept and tolerate all of these things if they appear in a PWP. Why?

Because it's only bad if someone else is getting off to it, that's why.

Why is all of this okay as long as it's labeled as "kink?" What if the author actually sees nothing wrong with abuse and rape in real life, and just uses the "no kink is wrong or off-limits" idea as a screen?

You can't judge how the person sees rape and abuse in real life. That's the point. Unless the person makes statements to that effect about real life abuse and rape, they are dealing with these subjects in the realm of fantasy and it is a kink.

Huh, I actually think I know who you're talking about (go me). And, you know, you're totally right on every point about the things that appear in almost every story. Too bad I like the stories more than my caveats about this constant twist on how Sam and Dean are portrayed.

While admittedly, she's a good writer stylistically... yeah, getting kind of tired of not being able to critique her without the backlash. The OOC and constant whumpage has gotten to be a bit much. The thing that bugs me isn't even so much that she's written the pain!porn, its that its so highly prized by fandom.

Actually, rules check, are we avoiding naming said BNF because its against the rules, to avoid wank, or because we're just classy like that?

Pretty sure I know who you're talking about, but even if I'm wrong, the writer I'm thinking about does the exact same thing, or she did in the wip I read of hers that's been going on for at least a couple years.

I think she's a wonderful technical writer and does a great job with tone, and evoking emotion and sympathy, but what bothers me the most is the repetition, and the 'lesson' we're supposed to get out of her pairing portrayal. I knew, going into the wip, that we didn't share kinks, but I went in anyway out of curiosity, and it's not the kinks or characterization that bothers me, so much as it's the insistence that evol!Sam conditioning slave!Dean is, at the end of the day, a good thing and that it's not really rape, honest it's not, because deep down, Dean wants it as much as Sam does. Sometimes it infuriates me on an irrational level, sometimes it makes me feel somewhat amused and further fascinated in this trend, and sometimes I'm ambivalent about it. So I do get what your frustration, and I guess all you can really do is keep writing or reading what you like, and hope that the trope at least wanes in popularity.

There's no way this isn't about Bright Lights of Disturbia.
I have some very depraved kinks of mine own so I wont touch that. Fact is it's just a bad fic. The writing is okay but the characters are totally OOC, it was way too drawn out and just completely overdid the hurt!Dean thing. Even I, fucked up as I am, was disturbed at how much the author seemed to get off on abusing Dean in every single way possible. And not only Dean but the reader too. She gives an inch, gives a happy moment, and then it's like you're being kicked in the vagina. Repeatedly.
I read all 25830498348 chapters of this thing in a day and I regret it so fucking much. It pulls you in with the drama but it's not worth the time. When I see people talking about starting it I beg them to change their minds.
