Kate's great! I would have loved to have her on SGA more, but not at the expense of her brother.

[identity profile] checkerbloom.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nuh-uh. Rodney made that show for me, they could have killed off all the other characters and called it The McKay Show, wherein Rodney McKay potters around Atlantis doing sciency stuff and ranting into thin air, I would've been like a pig in mud!

[identity profile] lejic.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha this! This! ♥

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the above posts. SGA was Rodney McKay show for me with lots of side-kicks haha. I wish there was more of Kate Hewlett though, she's awesome.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I got sick of the whole cast and characters by the end, so instead I just wish Jeanie had gone on her own adventures with her own team in a spin-off. Maybe Jonas Quinn and Vala could join in the fun.

[identity profile] shinigamitabris.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
while i still loved the main cast by the end, particularly mckay, i entirely agree with this spinoff plan. (it would probably last longer than sgu did :x)

I would watch the ever-living fuck out of a Jeannie-Jonas-Vala team. Especially if you made the fourth member Teal'c and their commanding officer Sam, with frequent guest appearances by Janet, Zelenka, Teyla, and Bra'tac. It would be the best Stargate EVER.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I also wouldn't mind Major Lorne and Mitchell hanging around. Not a big fan of Teal'c, but I figure there's got to be at least one character you're not in love with in each series. Keeps a sense of balance. ;)

Ditto. Actually, McKay was the only character I hated in all of Stargate. I wish they had chosen his sister instead. She was much more interesting.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Never liked Mckay, he was so strange and couldn't watch a scene with him and take it seriously, but kind of liked his sister.

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
spoiler alert, I'm about to sound like a huge asshole here. I hope no one takes offense to this, especially OP, but I can't really stop you if that's what you wanna do. So if this does offend anyone, I apologize, a whole lot, I really do.

I hated his sister. I hated Kate a whole lot. McKay was super flawed and super fantastic for it. He wasn't the smartest but he had the biggest ego, and for that reason he THOUGHT he was the smartest. He was realistic. He was an asshole, smarmy, selfish, a pig, and he went through many, many changes, some excruciating, some annoying, some hilarious, some upsetting. Kate was not that. Kate was The Perfect One. She didn't strike me as interesting. She didn't have flaws, she was beautiful, she was super smart but she was modest. No, no, to me, Kate was a Mary Sue, and I did not like Kate, at all.

inb4 femmwank/trolls/you only hate her cuz she's a chick, no. No, i loved all the other female characters. But I could not stand Kate.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think she had flaws? Really? I think Jeannie had almost the exact same personality as Rodney, just run through a filter of younger sibling, woman, and mother. She's just as arrogant, just as judging, and just as firm in her belief that she will always be right. And I love both of them rather a lot.

Though it rather makes you wonder about their parents, really.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think she might have come off like a Mary Sue because she was a guest character. Like when McKay was a guest character on SG-1. He was a one dimentional pig-headed asshole. That's what he was there to be. It wasn't until Atlantis that he actually got some development. I think the same would be for Jeanie. She was never really written as a whole character.

Unless it was actually Kate that you hated, not the character. Because then I've got nothing. :)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Kate was a Mary Sue,

This is where any credibility you had went bye-bye.

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
*headdesk* That was my bad. I get on a roll

The best explanation I can give there is the true one, I disliked her character so much I blocked her name out entirely.

But that's okay, I never expected that I had much credibility anyway, so I don't see that as any kind of loss. You can't really lose what you didn't have...

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, to me? McKay (whom I mostly liked) was the biggest wish fulfilment ever on the part of the writers. Nerdy "chubby"* white boy who saves the universe on a constant basis and is slightly caustic but everyone who watches really loves him because of all of those things.

I'm not saying he wasn't flawed at all, but so many people pretty much just excuse them because everything else makes up for them. I love me some flawed characters, and I am currently thinking of characters in books by Amy Thomson's novels where they are awesome awesome characters - but their flaws are flaws that make you angry at them yourself, not "Mary Sue" or "Gary Stu" flaws which are often genuine flaws however fandom and the writers treated like personality perks (writers, sometimes - fandom, seemed like it all time).

Anyways, I liked Jeannie. I liked McKay too (just not the way fandom portrayed him, at all. Seriously. I hate fandom McKay so much).

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Rodney was really a Gary Stu until near the end of the series though, early on he straight up annoyed all the characters, the Sg-1 team didn't like him, he was constantly being one-uped by Sam and no one could tolerate his arrogance.

SGA started out similarly, but eventually he just became this weird wish fulfillment character where they put him with the hot blonde he had no chemistry with and IDK even what really happened because by season 5 I couldn't take the bad writing anymore (watched the finale but missed most of the rest of the season.)

[identity profile] skinscript.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like the character Jeannie McKay either, very much, except in The Shrine, but Kate Hewlett is pretty fantastic.

[identity profile] skinscript.livejournal.com - 2011-05-17 04:24 (UTC) - Expand

oops, my apologies

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a long night and I did look like a dick. I don't hate Kate. I love her. Quite a bit. Won't elaborate.

...I still hate Jeannie though. But if anyone wants to him me in the skull for that anyway, let me do it for you

[identity profile] slian-martreb.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
OP: I wholeheartedly disagree with you. Like, woah. She works well as a foil to McKay, but I would dig my eyeballs out with a spoon if I had to watch a whole episode of her week after week.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, OP, the "OMG WHAT A MARY SUEEEEEE" rants would have caused the writers to kill her off really quick. If she only had a penis, she'd be safe.

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
There's an AU fic based on this idea, though I think all the other characters were replaced by females too. I never read it because it didn't interest me, so I can't be sure.

I do like Jeannie, and think she's an awesome character, but McKay is my favourite character so I don't think that would be for me. I wouldn't have objected to seeing more of her though! Still, she was happy with her family, so I don't think that would have worked all that well either...

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I like Kate, I emphatically disagree. I LOVE David, so I'm glad things didn't happen your way, anon.

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Just cross out David and put Rodney in there...I really must go to bed.
