spoiler alert, I'm about to sound like a huge asshole here. I hope no one takes offense to this, especially OP, but I can't really stop you if that's what you wanna do. So if this does offend anyone, I apologize, a whole lot, I really do.

I hated his sister. I hated Kate a whole lot. McKay was super flawed and super fantastic for it. He wasn't the smartest but he had the biggest ego, and for that reason he THOUGHT he was the smartest. He was realistic. He was an asshole, smarmy, selfish, a pig, and he went through many, many changes, some excruciating, some annoying, some hilarious, some upsetting. Kate was not that. Kate was The Perfect One. She didn't strike me as interesting. She didn't have flaws, she was beautiful, she was super smart but she was modest. No, no, to me, Kate was a Mary Sue, and I did not like Kate, at all.

inb4 femmwank/trolls/you only hate her cuz she's a chick, no. No, i loved all the other female characters. But I could not stand Kate.

You don't think she had flaws? Really? I think Jeannie had almost the exact same personality as Rodney, just run through a filter of younger sibling, woman, and mother. She's just as arrogant, just as judging, and just as firm in her belief that she will always be right. And I love both of them rather a lot.

Though it rather makes you wonder about their parents, really.

I think she might have come off like a Mary Sue because she was a guest character. Like when McKay was a guest character on SG-1. He was a one dimentional pig-headed asshole. That's what he was there to be. It wasn't until Atlantis that he actually got some development. I think the same would be for Jeanie. She was never really written as a whole character.

Unless it was actually Kate that you hated, not the character. Because then I've got nothing. :)

Kate was a Mary Sue,

This is where any credibility you had went bye-bye.

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
*headdesk* That was my bad. I get on a roll

The best explanation I can give there is the true one, I disliked her character so much I blocked her name out entirely.

But that's okay, I never expected that I had much credibility anyway, so I don't see that as any kind of loss. You can't really lose what you didn't have...

lmao, to me? McKay (whom I mostly liked) was the biggest wish fulfilment ever on the part of the writers. Nerdy "chubby"* white boy who saves the universe on a constant basis and is slightly caustic but everyone who watches really loves him because of all of those things.

I'm not saying he wasn't flawed at all, but so many people pretty much just excuse them because everything else makes up for them. I love me some flawed characters, and I am currently thinking of characters in books by Amy Thomson's novels where they are awesome awesome characters - but their flaws are flaws that make you angry at them yourself, not "Mary Sue" or "Gary Stu" flaws which are often genuine flaws however fandom and the writers treated like personality perks (writers, sometimes - fandom, seemed like it all time).

Anyways, I liked Jeannie. I liked McKay too (just not the way fandom portrayed him, at all. Seriously. I hate fandom McKay so much).

I don't think Rodney was really a Gary Stu until near the end of the series though, early on he straight up annoyed all the characters, the Sg-1 team didn't like him, he was constantly being one-uped by Sam and no one could tolerate his arrogance.

SGA started out similarly, but eventually he just became this weird wish fulfillment character where they put him with the hot blonde he had no chemistry with and IDK even what really happened because by season 5 I couldn't take the bad writing anymore (watched the finale but missed most of the rest of the season.)

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Early on, for sure he wasn't. But yeah he definitely morphed into one. Although unfortunately fandom and the writers opinions on him have so coloured what I think about when I think of him, and I hate that.

I stopped around the same time-ish you did. I watched most of season 4? But I spent half of it angry, and then I just stopped because I couldn't deal with it anymore. I tried to enjoy the beginning of season 4, really I did. But I just kind of stopped caring.

It also confused me because I personally thought season 3 was AWESOME, and they could have done some seriously cool stuff with Elizabeth being nanited up. However, that obviously did not happen (trying to get her out of the job, her being all freaked out, then having some crazy thing happen when she helps and then, fdlkjaGKLJJJJJFg. It would've been cool. There would have been awesome scenes with her and Teyla, her and John, her and Rodney, her and... oh wait, they'd killed Carson at that point....).

I think basically, thinking about SGA makes me sad and frustrated and thus I tend not to do it anymore (Doctor Who! Sanctuary! Parks and Rec!)

I didn't like the character Jeannie McKay either, very much, except in The Shrine, but Kate Hewlett is pretty fantastic.

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Jeannie. Not Kate. Kate I love, very much. Sorry, it's been a long night. -.- go ahead and slap me, please, I feel like a failure for that.

[identity profile] skinscript.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, happens to everyone. How about a hug instead? *hug*

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
*hug* Hugs are great. Thanks. xD

oops, my apologies

[identity profile] awkward-poet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a long night and I did look like a dick. I don't hate Kate. I love her. Quite a bit. Won't elaborate.

...I still hate Jeannie though. But if anyone wants to him me in the skull for that anyway, let me do it for you
