I know some people pirate games or movies because they don't have the money, and I can understand wanting to play or watch something right away, but that doesn't make what you're doing any less illegal. Don't expect me to sympathize with your "But I'm poor!" excuse. You can wait until you can purchase the game legally.

Freakin' this!

but that doesn't make what you're doing any less illegal

No one is saying that it does. Or at least I'm not. I KNOW it's illegal, and if I get caught, well. I'll be in even worse money trouble than I am now. Such are the consequences of my actions. It's not an excuse to me. It's just a reason.

You can wait until you can purchase the game legally.

Except for those ones that are rare/not available anymore. I can think of three games off the top of my head that I DID wait to try and save up the money to afford, because I wanted to support the makers, but by the time I finally had it (which took like three years of scrounging pennies and dimes), it was out of print and not available anywhere for purchase.

Does that make it any more "okay" to illegally download it? No, of course not. And I don't pretend that it is. But I would rather pirate the game and get the chance to play it at all, rather than save up and lose the opportunity. And that's my choice; I'll deal with the consequences and guilty conscience for it.

I'm curious which games were out of print within a three year period. That's fairly rare.

Anyway, it goes beyond your moral qualms - this isn't an appeal to your conscience as much as to your sense of love for the people making these games: please don't pirate. It has a tangible and very bad effect on the industry. We'd almost rather you buy it second hand than pirate.

Or you could play it now and buy it later when you have the money. As long as you support financially the things you liked with all the money you can spare...
Of course I know that this cannot work as a system since only a little part of the population would be honest enough to pay for stuff they already played/read/listened to. But it can work for individuals imho.

Eg I made an account on Gametap just to play realMyst, which was free at the time. When they put it on the list of games you had to pay a monthly subscription for, I got an iso (I don't like the idea of virtually renting games and the site's offer wouldn't have justified a long-term subscription, plus boycotting the Uru boycott, long story). Now that it's finally available on Steam and GoG, after playing the game twice, I bought my perfectly legal copy and I'm happy that my money went to the developers.
