I download a lot of games to play then, and then I buy all of my favorites. Does that make me awful anyway.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
considering how a lot of games that you have to spend $60 to purchase do not have demos for you to test the game out, it's a a bit of a risk dropping that much money on something that you might not like, or even be able to play.

I also find it disappointing when people gush over how amazing the game they pirated is. If you enjoyed it, you owe it to its creators to pay for the product they invested their time and experience in.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
lol I remember being 16 and having a DS with a game card packed full of downloaded games..Good times.

Then I got a job.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about ripping off from the game shops, since the game shops themselves tend to rip off the developers.

I care about the developers. Not so much developers like, say, Activision that are swimming in money, but developers like Namco-Bandai that are struggling. Not to mention the fans that whine and bitch and moan when games they like don't get localized, yet then go and pirate them. Oh, good, so hurt the chances of future localizations even more. Good on you. I get that you're broke -- fuck, I'm nearing $100,000 in debt from student loans, working two jobs AND going to school and I STILL barely have enough money to sustain myself -- but in that case, either rent games or just save up money to buy them later. Don't pirate.

I will never buy a game from EA. Not after that shit with Securom. Forgive me if I'm not willing to put my computer at risk just so I can line the pockets of the ~poor game developers~. But unlike some people, I can't afford to replace my system if it gets fried by a bullshit, illegal anti-piracy move.

I know some people pirate games or movies because they don't have the money, and I can understand wanting to play or watch something right away, but that doesn't make what you're doing any less illegal. Don't expect me to sympathize with your "But I'm poor!" excuse. You can wait until you can purchase the game legally.

I kind of agree minus the "disgusted" and "lose respect for" part

I wish people wouldn't pirate, I personally find it disrespectful, and really hate the attitude that people have that "well I can't afford it, that makes it ok" (and it doesn't.)

It just makes me really sad to see people ignoring the fact that people worked hard to create these things they're enjoying so much. especially if it's something like an indie game and not one of the big-name bestsellers. they have to eat too, you know.

I don't think it makes them less of a fan, though.

Where I live each game costs around 200 bucks and non pirated games are rare to see(In fact, most people who order non-pirated games buy them through the internet), so I don't think it's a black/white thing. There are people (myself included) that would love to pay for the games they like, but aren't in a place where they can afford it.

Being a fan of the product and owning the product are not mutually exclusive

That aside, the only thing that irks me is when someone goes out of their way to justify it. It ends up sounding too much like entitlement. I admit to pirating software and new releases for a variety of reasons, but I'm not about to pretend I'm still saintly.

I was formulating some thoughtful explanation as to why someone might turn to piracy, but then I saw the TS3 logo and now I'm just baffled.

I can't see why you'd be disgusted by people refusing to pay excessive amounts of money for things that don't work as sold.

(missing the point, I know, but of all the games to use as examples... really?)

Seeing all of this makes me very glad I still have a video store in town that rents video games. I wouldn't have been able to play DAII so soon if I hadn't. It'll be great later when I can try different games and only pay for the nights I use them. I'll buy them on sale later if I end up wanting a copy of my own.

I don't know when I'll buy a game that isn't on sale. I can't afford to do it any other way.

I know it's probably uncool of me to say this but FF13...pfft, they deserve to lose money on that game. We bought it after preordering. Sadly it's a let down. Well, I didn't enjoy it as much as 12/previous FFs. Terrible justification I know, still, I wish I'd rented first before dropping $70.

I'm in a position of being able to afford the games I'd like so I'm thankful for that.

Personally I can't justify paying +$60 for a game pretty much sight unseen. It seems like companies are putting out less and less demos and more micro payment crap a la DLCs (which are really just patches for a broken game that was released before it was done). I download games to try them out. If I really love them then I consider buying them if the price is right, otherwise I wait for the initial launch price to go down. Unless it's an indie game that I really like, then I'll just buy it. They're rarely over $20 anyways.

I agree with OP that if you really do like a series/game you should try to support it. But there is being supportive and knowing when you're getting scammed out of your money. :/ EA is notorious for ripping of its consumers with "expansions." How many expansions of The Sims are there now?? Each released at $40 a pop. That's a very expensive game for just rehashing the same shit over and over again with slightly better graphics and the same shitty ass file structure. But I do enjoy the game and what Maxis created which is why I bought the original Sims 3 game (still regret giving the bastards money) and that was it. All those expansions should've been included in the initial release as far as I'm concerned. :/

I don't think paying for something makes you a better fan, just (probably) a richer one. While I personally never pirate games, I can understand why people do - yeah, they could save up over time, but by then you've got spoilers up, and you don't get to experience it in time with most everyone else.

It all kind of runs into a moral grey area for me, depending on the situation.
