I've also frequently seen warnings for 'het.' I'm not sure what's the point of warning for het or slash -- shouldn't it be apparent in the pairing names?

I've only seen "het" warning for when it comes to het sex? Never come across that kind of warning if just a pairing

The squick goes both ways. The only time I think a warning for Het (or slash) would be justified is if it's a background pairing in a fic being posted to the opposite community.

For example, you have a past het ship in your slash fic posted on a slash-only community. Or some secondary slash ship going on in the background of your primarily het fic being posted in a het-only community. Because in both those cases, you get people shrieking at you about their safe-space being invaded if you don't warn.

It would still be better to put het or slash in a different place than warnings, or say something like "Male A/Female B, past Male A/Male C."

There are two situations I can think of right now where it would be more appropriate to warn for het/slash than list the pairing name:

1. Surprise pairings. Sometimes, you don't want to list the pairing right off the bat, but you also don't want to get nasty comments from pissed off readers. Therefore, warning for the type of relationship (and putting in a disclaimer about surprise pairings, don't get offended about your OTP, that kind of thing) would work better for the story.

2. If, at the beginning of a WIP, you are unsure what exactly the pairings are going to be, but are reasonably sure there will be some kind of romantic subplot. Avoids the same issues as #1, and allows yourself some leeway re: pairing choice. And yes, I have seen people start fanfiction without knowing what the main pairing is going to be, because I hang out in the heavily crossover/gen corners of fandom, all by myself.
