Yeah, I agree, but it's more like all fandoms.

Guys, if the pairing involves two males/females, it's sort of a given that there's going to be homosexuality.

Yeah, pretty much. Why, are people scared that they're going to offend het shippers or something? LAWL

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I'm glad I'm not in fandoms where I've noticed this being a thing.

Het fans in Merlin are like Sasquatch: rumoured but never seen....O_O

[identity profile] nikki4noo.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I just love it when we get the warnings for this on comms that are devoted to slash pairings. Way to offend most readers! *headdesk*

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the "sex" warning has anything to do with warning against (or for) homosexuality though, does it? I mean, I go on slash communities, and they have it too. It's more about "warning" people that the post includes porn or detailed sex, which some readers might not want to read about, because of their ages or preferences or whatever.

I agree that boy-kissing sounds silly though. I mean, no one warns people in fics for "kissing", right? So boy-kissing? Mn. And "homosexual relationship", I don't really get it, either. Except maybe if the community in question is for both het, slash and gen lovers, so then I suppose it does have a purpose. Although "slash" would work better and be less offensive, I agree.

Not just Merlin fandom, what's worse is when it's a slash comm, and people still warn for "teh boy kisses"

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Slight tangent: I don't warn for gay, I warn for crack pairings. My favorite slash pairing is also a raging crack pairing, so it gets warned.

Yeah, it bothers me too. If I see Male X/Male Y (same goes for the ladies, obvs) and the genre Romance, I can pretty much assume it's going to be slash. You don't need to point it out, people!

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much the reason I quit FFNet, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand if it's a het comm or something because this is what I usually do ever since someone told me off for not warning them for incoming gayness.

Especially in comms dedicated to slash pairings, but really in all comms, identifying your (slash) pairing and warning for explicit sex should be sufficient. I agree with the people above who say that listing homosexual relationships, etc. under warnings is super fucking offensive.

Also, the use of "boykissing" as a euphemism for TWO GROWN MEN HAVING SEX irritates the shit out of me. Juuuuust saying.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've also frequently seen warnings for 'het.' I'm not sure what's the point of warning for het or slash -- shouldn't it be apparent in the pairing names?

Everything would be fine if everyone changes "Warnings" for "Contains".

Also: I think people says it contains slash because not everyone is consistent with the use of / for denoting pairings.
That's why you can find headers that include "Arthur/Merlin. Non Slash" or "Arthur, Merlin. SLASH".

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the tee-hee quality of it, like slash is so forbidden and daring and shameful, when in fact it's common as grass and obvious as the stated pairing on the header and anyone who has been in fandom longer than 10 days should notice both these things.

I avoid those fics because they reek of immaturity.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously?? I don't watch that show, but isn't that, like...the entire point??

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
this doesn't bother me one bit. If the author warns that the story they write has slash I doubt they're homophobic since they wrote the story. But if the author is homophobic I wouldn't care, I just want to read the fic not study how wrong/evil/ignorant the author is.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've never gotten why people do this, because no matter the gender, if you use a slash or smush the names together, I'm going to assume some sort of romance. I do appreciate warnings for sexy times (you never know, the R rating might be for violence) because then I bookmark the stories for when I'm not at risk of someone reading over my shoulder.

But there's no reason to go overboard, and I don't need a warning for kisses. Wth.

This is a secret?

(...is anyone else extra annoyed by people who warn for 'boykissing' when both the 'boys' are over 20? IT'S MANKISSING, PEOPLE, SHUT UP)

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
lndfjlgnseljgnl THIS SO DAMN HAAAAARD.

I am NOT in the Merlin fandom, never seen it - but I have seen this in all my fandoms. We don't warn for straight kissing, why the fuck warn for gay kissing? If they need to be "warned" then I don't want them in fandom, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
On slash comms, that's dumb. On general comms and archives, it's just a way to forestall stupid comments, because yes, you can receive them, especially if you have the utter gall to include or even allude to a minor slash pairing in a het fic.

I have one fairly popular het fic which includes a tiny reference to slash; the number of "ewwww" and "why didn't you warn me?" reviews I've gotten can give you a headache. I still don't warn for slash because look at the fucking description where the pairings are listed, but I can understand why some people would want to.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Understandable if it's a gen fic or something and there's sex. I would like some heads up if there's het sex in my slash too so that I can skip it.

Though not necessarily call it a warning. More like a note of some kind.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I just assume they're all slash now unless the summary says otherwise. I find this pathetic. If you're into that, yay for you, but not everyone is and that's all the fandom basically consists of.

Yeah, this sort of thing belongs under "Pairings" or "Ratings," not "Warnings". I have to make sure I list it, because some of my readers are Het Only and some are Slash Only, and as I tend to multiship like mad it makes sense to let them know what they're in for so I don't get an inbox full of Ew, but slash (or het, or poly, for that matter) is not a warning, it's a rating issue.
