Oddly enough, I grew up on an awful lot of Star Trek my own self (and scifi), but my faith is still a major part of my life. (Odder still is that when struggling through a difficult time, what helped me keep that faith was less about points of view I'd picked up from Star Trek and more about points of view I'd picked up from the Sandman.) Granted, I watched more TOS than TNG, and I think TOS had more than a few episodes that were very faith/Christian-slanted ("Bread and Circuses" anyone?), so there's that.


Star Trek and good scifi in general holds a mirror to ourselves and our society and makes us take a good look at that, whether or not we're aware. Preaching may or may not be involved, but I think at the end of the day, what you take away from a good story isn't so much something you didn't have in you before, but a clearer understanding of that.
