... did I write this secret in my sleep?

[identity profile] trekkiesara.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I grew up on Star Trek (hell, I got married on the bridge of the Enterprise in Vegas!) and I'm pretty Catholic. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
OT: My dream wedding was the Star Trek one in Vegas. I almost cried when they got rid of it. You have no idea how much I envy you.

I'm an anthropologist because of the TNG episode "Darmok." So I'd say that Star Trek is definitely capable of that kind of life-shaping influence.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
part of the reason why i'm a geographer is because of chekov and "navigator"

[identity profile] tenonthedot.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
That would make sense...

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Becoming atheist because of a simple show? That's...well, that's...wow that's good?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
You make it sound like OP saw the show and was like "oh, being an atheist sounds cool." It's less of that and more of absorbing a piece of media's perceptions about things. Media can influence you in ways you can't imagine.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
If it did influence you, it only gave you the opportunity to explore horizons. If you grew up in a world where atheism wasn't introduced to you it would be highly likely you would remain religious. Broadening your knowledge is a great thing - and Star Trek tends to do that!

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I almost lose faith in God when I tried watching that series. God, Star Trek TOS is fucking boring.

I've always wondered if watching Scooby Doo as a child made me an atheist... it was never a -real- monster

I think you would have come to the same conclusions anyway...

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was Star Trek specifically, but I do think all the science fiction I grew up on influenced me towards atheism and agnosticism. It's often such an atheistic genre in general, though moreso in books than tv/movies, that I definitely think it made me think more about about god and religion in general in a critical sense than I think I would have otherwise had I not read and watched so much of it when I was really young.

I was raised on Next Gen and I'm pretty religious. That's not to say you couldn't get something else from the same source, but I don't think Trek's powers include forced atheism :P

There are worse things to be influenced by, either way.

[identity profile] pockythoughts.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
The only problem I have with this secret is that there is really no such thing as 'too much' Star Trek.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough, I grew up on an awful lot of Star Trek my own self (and scifi), but my faith is still a major part of my life. (Odder still is that when struggling through a difficult time, what helped me keep that faith was less about points of view I'd picked up from Star Trek and more about points of view I'd picked up from the Sandman.) Granted, I watched more TOS than TNG, and I think TOS had more than a few episodes that were very faith/Christian-slanted ("Bread and Circuses" anyone?), so there's that.

Star Trek and good scifi in general holds a mirror to ourselves and our society and makes us take a good look at that, whether or not we're aware. Preaching may or may not be involved, but I think at the end of the day, what you take away from a good story isn't so much something you didn't have in you before, but a clearer understanding of that.

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was Gene Roddenberry's plan all along.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
If that were the case I'd make Richard Dawkins look like a lightweight and, yeah, no.

Thinking about it, watching Bill Nye probably didn't help my trending towards the hardcore "SCIENCE RULES" atheist that I am now.

What, science is awesome. People who don't think the world is amazing on its own need to take a harder look at it.

I grew up on Star Trek because my (super-religious) mom loves it, and I'm not an atheist. But something can affect different people in different ways, so who knows? Maybe it did affect your views.

(One thing TOS did make me do is try to be as logical as possible in approaching new situations and ideas, because I wanted to be like Spock.)

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps you were exposed to exactly the right amount of Star Trek? :)

[identity profile] frankemix.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
.. What? My mother grew up on Star Trek and is very much a Christian.

[identity profile] angelofcaffeine.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Trek TOS was totally Jewish. It's much more likely to have caused my sudden surge in observance as a young teen than your atheism, OP. :P

[identity profile] seesnapefly.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
My grandfather was a Presbyterian Minister with a PhD. in philosophy and he loved Star Trek.

I guess what's great about Star Trek is that everyone gets something a little different out of it. Personally, I never saw it as very atheistic.
