Now I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, since these things have exploded onto almost every online fandom.

I was into MLP at five. And from the 80's...yeah, that series sucked. The new series is by the same lady who helped give us PowerPuff Girls and Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends. The only similarity it has with the original series (aside from the occasional sneaky shout-outs) is that there are ponies that talk, and one of them is named Applejack. That's...pretty much it. It's a well-put together, charming piece of animation, kind of in the same vein as Phineas & Ferb in that it manages to by completely uncynical and inclusive without feeling forced and cheesy.

*blushes* actually I wasn't being sarcastic I'm afraid.

I lurk around the crime show/fantasy/sci-fi and, to a lesser extent, historical fiction areas of the net and all my r/l and online friends I may have talked about them to we only remember/have heard of the 80's series so it was quite a shock to realise they are still going (apparently) strongly.

Is this programme only in America? I've not heard any of the young children I know on this side of the pond talking about them - having said that I could just be considered old/old-fashioned/out-of-touch by the younger generation these days which is why I don't know about it.

(And if they've brought MLP back I wonder if anyone could be persuaded to bring back Jem and She-Ra, whilst I'm on a nostalgia kick. Those I miss!)

To be honest, I haven't heard any kids talking about it either. I found out about it because of a webcomic (Shortpacked), and kept seeing it pop up in Team Fortress 2 fandom, of all things (because blowing people to bits and magical ponies somehow go together like...well, I'd say peanut-butter and jelly, but maybe like a flake and soft serve ice cream?). Really, I don't know how many little kids have normal access to it, since it plays on the Hub--Hasbro's new special channel that you have to order or whatever. Most folks watch it on YouTube, and since Hasbro considers the show to just be a twenty-two minute commercial for the toys (that many little girls would probably get whether or not they watched the show), they leave it up there. The first season just wrapped up with 24 episodes, and they're all available in HD on YouTube. As far as actually airing on television, it might just be available in the US, but YouTube is everyone's friend.
