It's basically what he said. If you were a yakuza member and you disobeyed your boss in some way, you'd have to go through this ritual of cutting off your thumb and then give it your boss. To have a cartoon character with four fingers would make the kids think he got his finger cut off by the yakuza, which would be, well, too scary for them. (meaning yes MICKEY MOUSE IS THE BEAST THAT HIDES UNDER THEIR BED)

It makes me hungry just thinking about it.
