[Great Big Sea]

Ooookay?
BUT GREAT BIG SEA SECRET. <3

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
So how then, dare I ask, OP? Likes boys, but currently wouldn't cheat on his wife kind? I'm just interested on how you see it, genuinely?

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I'm confused as well by the happily married in a straight relationship but queer...unless you mean he's bi?

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but I have seen them live three times and met Sean once (proof (http://fav.me/d2ozei6)) so I think I can guess where this is coming from, which is that when they perform, they actually do make a lot of jokes about each other's sexuality, very regularly up to the point of "flirting" with each other. Even offstage, the impression I got was that they are genuinely very close as friends, and both for that reason and by necessity of touring, they're very comfortable with each other.

That's just speaking generally of the band interacting with each other. I'm only GUESSING that may be where the OP is coming from. If it's not, I have no idea how the OP is reading this on their gaydar because I can't see it onstage, on camera, and didn't see it when I went to his solo debut show and met him.

Also, holy shit this band even HAS a fandom?? And people know about any of the band members other than Alan??? (And now Alan, I can see being called a bit queer. He totally, totally is. But Sean??)

...WHAT ARE YOU... oh okay, American. That's okay, it's not your fault. YES. Oh gods, yes. Yes, it does. I'm kind of jealous because places like where you live if they show up they'll play like festival seating in clubs! Whereas in Vancouver it's just too damn big for that. Even the Malkin Bowl shows are mostly assigned seating these days. ;_; That's what I loved about the Olympic show - that was like old times, with GIANT MOSH PIT OF VERTICAL MOVEMENT AWESOME RIGHT UP TO THE STAGE. It was epic.

Start at the OKP/Online Kitchen Party, look for ... agh, I don't even know who the BNFs are in places like DC. But the OKPers should get you going.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well the two times I saw them as a band, they definitely did fill up the place, but yeah -- it wasn't crazy madhouse packed and it was easy as anything to get tickets anywhere you wanted to sit (even the VIP seats if you had the money, which sadly I did not). Also most of the people there were age 40+ or parents with younger kids.

The third time I saw them was Sean's solo debut which he played, for some reason, in this tiny-ass bar about a half hour from where I live. In VIRGINIA. The only reason I can contemplate for that is maybe it's because his brother lives in DC? Maybe? But still... I found it an odd choice.

It was crowded, but yet again, back to your point... this joint was TINY and it was no busier than any bar on a Saturday night around here. Actually, the rest of the band WAS there, but -- and this is why I see them as being very cool people who must genuinely like and respect each other -- they showed up for Sean's first solo show on their day off, and all hung back in the darkest part of the place being as inconspicuous as possible until he waved them over. And he did invite Alan and one of the other guys (I can't remember who) to come up onstage and play some duets with him, but even then, having seen them live, it was so, so obvious that they were all making an effort to hang back and let it be Sean's show. And they all beat it as soon as it was over so people wouldn't go try to chat with them instead of talking to Sean. Which... really I though was so awesome of them. Really classy.

I don't probably have much time to get involved in another forum full o' fans right now, but I will definitely check it out and probably at least go over and say hi. :) Thanks for the link!

I was also at that show (we happened to be in DC on vacation). We were in the back where Alan was standing and were all "is that?" and yes, it was.

The guys all went to the Irish pub across the street afterwards. I know this because we saw them come in, all laughing and joking, while we were eating.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-05-27 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, we were at that same show, awesome!

My wife and I were near the door... mainly because it was 90 degrees that day and there was an air conditioning vent right above our spot on the wall. XD

I'm not the OP, but headcanon!Sean is totally a transman hero for transitioning in place. (I mean srsly have you seen the original Ordinary Day video? As a dyke, I have to say: yum. oh god, yum.)

(Yes I am of course totes aware that headcanon!Sean is not in any way reallife!Sean but headcanon!Sean lives there in the back of my head. I can't help it. XD)

I love Great Big Sea! I own many of their albums and have enjoyed their music since I was pretty young!

Who the devil is this guy?

(lol bandom whaaat)

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's Sean McCann the Shantyman!

Basically, any time a song has a raspy pirate tenor, that's Sean singing. Also, playing the bodhran.

Have you watched the Great Big DVD? It's pretty awesome stuff of the b'ys.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
GREAT BIG SEACRET! GAAAH!

We get, like, one of these every three years or something. AWESOME.

Um. But, yeah, I don't really see it. I mean, I won't lie, I was genuinely surprised when I went to the fandom and saw there was no slash when on the average nerd-site, Alan and Sean would be slashed every which way. But, nah, Sean doesn't come off as "queer" whatever it is you actually mean by that. Not to me, anyway.

A little weird seeing a secret for this band, considering the only way I know of them is because my dad took me to one of their concerts.

They all do seem a little oddly flirtatious with each other, tho. *shrug*

lol what GBS fandom are you in? THE BAND MAKES THE JOKES THEMSELVES THE FANDOM DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO but totally does. Totally does. idk, maybe it's more popular in actual real life fandom XD
