(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)did you not read my post at all? You didn't find anything gender defining because you said yourself you were projecting yourselves onto them. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's part of the immersion of the game. But when you separate yourself from the individual character, you'll find several gender defining things about them.
Atlas has, if you were to move his core higher up, would show as having very broad shoulders. His whole body, except for the core, his "head", is box shaped. His robotic noises are very deep to the range one would typically identify as male. He runs (as seen in the CO-OP trailer) in a way that is wide-set and seems to be centered in his lower legs and feet. It's a heavy run, reminiscent of a typical solider. All of these things come together to send signals to the human player that Atlas is designed to look MALE.
P-body has a curvacious, narrower design. Her "voice" is higher pitched in comparison to Atlas, and P-body is given "thighs", that connect to her core to mimic hips, which is a easily identifiable signal of a female. Her "shoulders" are narrower, her feet are smaller and less broad than Atlas', and she runs in a way that is centered in the hips. When you watch her run in slow motion, you see that she keeps her legs closer together, and that there's a slight shaking of the "hips" in her run, again typical female traits.
Just because you didn't notice it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)I did notice those differences, thank you very much, but you seem to be glued onto the idea ATLAS is more male and P-Body is more female. I've met males with high-pitched voices and females with deep voices. Voices mean nothing when it comes to robots and I've even seen theories about GLaDOS being male that held water until Portal 2 came out. Obviously, people picked different "signals" from their movements and design, so perhaps you're not noticing something that other people are.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)In these robots it doesn't matter, because they have no real gender and are simply made to mimic and exaggerate these human features. That's why P-body is taller, even though human females are typically shorter, because it's the slender female form exaggerated. Atlas is squat because he's a boxy, male, almost neanderthal form, taken to an extreme.
Though, due to the absence of several other things what differentiate a male and female, such as clear human faces, so a lot of folks don't pick up on it, or even ignore it.
I personally, think the signals they give off are very clear, but like you said, a lot of people are different.
