Well, the Japanese and Western "standards" for gaming are just very different. There are always people who stand out from the norm but for the most part, if your tastes fall in with Western standards (winding paths, multiple endings, open-ended plots, maybe more action-oriented), you're gonna play more Western games. If you like Japanese games (plot-heavy, generally character-driven, everything goes to a single static ending, more storytelling/cutscenes than action), you tend to stick to Japanese games.

It's definitely getting better as game developers hit that sweet spot between storytelling and action (especially in RPGs) but there's still a definite difference in how WRPGs and JRPGs work, which is precisely why those abbreviations are so well known. They're almost like different genres sometimes.

Unfortunately, a loooot of Japanese developers are struggling a bit as the Western ideology slowly takes over, but I think there'll always be a niche market for the fans of the Japanese RPG. I know I myself have started getting a bit bored of JRPGs since they never seem to be doing anything new but when one is highly recommended by my friends, I still try to check it out. (I don't like WRPGs either though so I've turned to action/adventure games as my genre of choice. @_@)

Anyway, point I'm getting at is that I can see why people are so picky and choosy because there's definitely a different between Western and Eastern games but I do agree that everything deserves a fair chance regardless of where it comes from, too.
