While I wouldn't have put it this way, I agree. Someone shouldn't have to be a Quinn to accept themselves or for society to accept them.

If someone wants to change that's fine but we have major problems in society with people who have self esteem problems over things that really shouldn't bother them. I know way too many pretty girls who don't think they're pretty at all.

It's so much easier said than done, though. When you go through 4+ years of your life hearing almost constantly how fat and ugly you are, it becomes hard not to believe it. It took me years being away from people like that to even start considering myself even remotely pretty when wearing make-up and extremely flattering clothing, and I still have days where I look in the mirror and all I can think of is all the horrible things my peers said to me in high school about how horrible I looked and believe them.

Emotions very rarely listen to logic. Logically, I know that by all accounts, I'm a fairly attractive woman. But knowing that doesn't stop me from feeling like the ugliest thing on the planet, no matter how many times I tell myself that it shouldn't matter what those assholes said.

Oh I know it's easier said then done, but that's also why I think we need change at a societal level, not just an individual one (I don't really want to put all the work on the victim anyway.)

The problem with just telling a woman to change though is it really is not that simple, even if someone loses weight, gets rid of glasses/braces and has plastic surgery to "fix" the problem, those self esteem issues can still be there. That's why we have perfectly beautiful women getting unnecessary plastic surgery, and that's why we have some of them doing it to a dangerous extent.

The culture is the problem, not you, and not other women.

Oh yes, I agree on pretty much every level. Those self-esteem issues can cling to you for life, and sadly, it's always the negative memories that seem to stick with us the most. It doesn't matter how many people tell you you're beautiful now; when it comes down to it, you still end up holding yourself to the standards laid out for you early on, when you were never thin/pretty/whatever enough for everyone elses' liking.

People need to realize that there are many different kinds of beauty out there; just because you don't have an hourglass figure or a "perfect" face doesn't mean you can't be gorgeous in your own way. (And it certainly wouldn't hurt if there was more of a focus on internal beauty. Looks shouldn't be the end-all-be-all of a person's self-worth.)
