There's an interview Michael Shanks did somewhere along the line where he talks about how he was lucky to have gotten a year off and how he feels bad that the other actors didn't get to have a year off and how tired they must be of doing the show... I wanted to reach through the screen and punch him in the face.

And people fought to get his arrogant ass back on the show? Really?

Realizing that I may have been missremembering what he said and how he may have meant it I want looking for the article on Gateworld to check. It's this one from 2007: gateworld.net/interviews/turn_of_the_page.shtml

And this is the relevant paragraph:
It was nice to have that break. I think for Christopher and Amanda, who didn't get the chance to have that time away, I think they suffered more fatigue the further we went along. And for me I was a lot fresher when I came back. It was nice, but it does feel like there are two separate stories there. Two separate series.

I thought he was forced off the show? And then everyone had to fight to get him back? He makes it sound like he took a break willingly and then came back on his own without any problems with the producers. Guess that fan campaign didn't actually do anything.

And I still think he sounds like an ass for commenting on how he feels sorry for Chris Judge and Amanda for not being able to take a break.

LOL he left because he wanted to do other roles and felt he was being typecast. IIRC, he really wanted to do theater. And then he got no jobs. So he came slinking back with his head hung down and they rehired him.

I totally get that annoyance.

Really, the things that bother you...

learning about actors has totally ruined a lot of things for me (latest: every time I was ferris bueller I'm going to be reminded of ben stein defending a rapist)

anyway, michael shanks :/ my daniel love definitely took a hit.

Oh god, Ben Stein is insane. He pretty much made an entire movie about how the theory of evolution is what caused the holocaust. I can't even deal with his levels of crazy.

Which sucks, because Win Ben Stein's Money was actually pretty funny.

I'll be maintaining until the day my fangirlish heart stops beating that Jonas was the better character, so, yes, I agree with you.

Daniel is one of my favs but I thought it was so dumb to bring Jonas in for a season then make him leave once Daniel came back. I liked Jonas.

I don't like Jonas better but like anon said it was so lame that he was just there for one season. Even if he was there as a replacement they could have at least had him on one more season with Daniel.

I just assumed he was getting more money or something when he came back *shrug* honestly I couldn't care less how people were billed in the credits. Though as recall everytime his "as Daniel Jackson" popped up I would giggle with glee during the 7th season. Really, I'm just so glad he came back to the show. =)

Also, they totally mocked his reasons for leaving in episode 200. Having the Wormhole Xtreme Daniel talk about how he wanted to leave to get back to his roots, the theater, how he enjoyed his time on off-off-offbroadway, and how thankful he was the the fans (all a dozen of them) who supported him and demanded he was brought back. =D

I loved that part of episode 200! And all the other parts where the producers are basically making fun of themselves. ♥

Because he's a goddamned diva. I fell out of even liking the show back during SG1 because of him, and it was so long ago that I don't remember specifics, only that he said some seriously douchebag shit about being ~*~more special~*~ than everyone else. I liked movie!Daniel Jackson better, he was a slightly derpy stereotypical Academic, but SG1 made him this Gary Stu badass with a massive intellect with an ego to match, and he probably figured he was just playing himself.

To echo the anon above: Because he's a goddamned diva.

The only reason he left in the first place/got killed off in season 5 was because he was bitching about his character not getting enough screen time and development. Even though the only character who really got more screen time was Jack.

So yeah...I like Daniel, but Michael Shanks' attitude has kind of soured him a bit for me.

While I agree that he's a diva, I think it's weird that people can dislike the whole show for one actor. I mean, if it was a character sure I would get that but who cares what the actor's like irl? We don't seek out the artists and writers of each and every book/comic-book and decide whether or not to read depending on that.
It's a shame you missed out on a great show for one diva. D:

Hmm. I thought it was because they listed him last and treated it kind of like a "last but not least" type of thing.

if you get upset about that then a lot of shows/movies/actors must really get your goat.

It's all a part of getting a better contract for actors and getting their name out there more and in a more noticeable way. Can't blame them for that.

For the same reason on SGA it's always David Hewlett "as Dr. McKay" and Paul McGillion "as Dr. Carson Beckett". For whatever reason, the contracts their agents agreed to included that as a stipulation of employment as a regular.

I've never watched a full episode of SG1 but I like Daniel simply because I love kid!fics and SG1 deaged kid fics are the cutest thing ever.

Now getting back on topic, don't worry OP, you're not the only one disliking a character because the actor is an asshole.

I had always thought it was a result of the character having been created in a work previously licensed in another work. At least, that was how I thought it worked...

Then wouldn't they have done that for O'Neill as well?

He had a good agent. Billing is everything.

At least in the earlier seasons, I'm pretty sure they did the same for RDA. Or at the very least they added a 'and starring' tag to his name.

I know Daniel Jackson was an Everyman turned Gary Stu, but I still enjoyed the character and was glad he was brought back (I mean seriously, the entire cast was just a set of archetypes anyway). I never did grow to love Jonas, he was too much like Daniel that I couldn't see him as anything but a replacement. I think they would have done much better with someone vastly different in either temperament (a cultural McKay?), skill set (someone who took their degree and ran to the peace corps with it?) or personality (someone who makes O'Neill's on-the-fly decisions look fluffly (but who can learn through character development)).

Luckily, for the most part, I pretty much judge someone by the quality of their work and their personal views than their actual personality. I don't care that he's a diva. From what I can tell (and really, with pretty much one major exception I stay quite far out of stars personal lives so it might not be accurate) he seems decent with his fans, I haven't heard of him supporting anything that I find horrifying or insulting, and his work is entertaining.

What do I care if he wants someone to pick out all the raisins in his trail mix? Maybe they remind him of a time when he was 7 and almost accidentally ate rat feces.
