Rape As Drama- It's In-Fucking-Escapable

Haha, let me introduce you to The Other Boleyn Girl movie, or more specifically THE MOST UNNECESSARILY TRIGGERING SCENE OF ALL TIME in which Elizabeth I is implied to be the product of rape.

/not still bitter or anything

Not to mention that the whole thing about her propositioning her brother for sex was a load of BS that they made up to execute the pair of them. I'm not saying Anne was an innocent little flower, but the way that movie (and apparently, novel) perpetuated known lies about someone who got screwed over in the worst possible way makes me rage a bit.

Overall, I don't understand why they feel the need to add drama to these time periods. There was enough murder, sex and mayhem in the truth of things, even for Showtime.

Ugh, agreeing with the bit about The Other Boleyn Girl! It was pretty messed up with some of the lies they put in there [for example, the one where she steals her sister's son? Yeeeah, from what I know that didn't happen - hell, from what I know it wasn't until much later, if at all, that one was tacked on.]

Other than that...maybe because it's not 'over the top' enough? Though, in this case I will say it's something could very well have happened in the time period, and might very well not be commented on if it had. The did have laws about rape but...well...they were...tricky at best.

See, at least the incest bullshit and implied childnapping were taken from the book, so I knew going into the film I was going to be stuck with them (and hey, in the book George and Anne actually DID bang so props to the filmmakers for NOT FUCKING GOING THERE) but the rape was something I was absolutely not expecting.

I mean, I'm used to reading historical fiction that skews quite misogynistic when it comes to Anne Boleyn (which is a pretty depressing statement) but usually the author tends to figure that being beheaded is enough "punishment", you know? Throwing a highly unlikely rape scenario into the movie actually made my jaw drop because it was like the filmmaker's hatred for this historical woman they obviously hadn't done research on was rolling off the screen.

/tl; dr? ah well, it was cathartic

Ahhh, I was actually talking about both the book and the movie - not just one or the other. Believe me, I've read it - and seen the movie - and was throughly disgusted by both. Though, by this point, I'm very used to seeing less-than-true embellishments put in, particularly since Anne Boleyn *was* the victim of the old tradition 'libel 'em after they've been replaced!'.

What depresses me more than anything is that, for the bad she did [there's no arguing that she *did* do some bad things] she also did some good ones...and *those* rarely get recognized in the books about her. For example, she actually did argue with Cromwell that what was gotten from the monasteries should go to charities for the people - not the kings coffers. But everyone chooses to ignore those things in favor of the bad.

The one thing I will say on the rape bit is just...I'm not sure it's particularly unlikely. Not because of who was involved but...well. At that time period rape wasn't, legallly, considered possible between a husband and wife. A husband had his right to...ah...'use' his wife whenever he chose, and if she refused him he was in his rights to take it from her. Not that I think that's right - it never is - but...that is how things were at the time. So, it actually possible likely that there was a rape somewhere in the mix, and no one would comment on it/write about it since it wouldn't seem out of place, sadly. Other than that, the bit about rape was actually directed at the secret and about The Borgias more than it was The Other Boleyn Girl.
