I think this would be really interesting tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's been done. HP-dom is huge and old, so just look harder.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are you looking for fic anon? 'Cause I've read lots of "not so great and powerful" HP fics.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be interesting but I don't think people doesn't write that kind of Harry because they don't want him to be less than perfect. It's just that he's got an average intelligence in canon, so people usually respect that. Besides, writing about a character with that trait without knowing about this kind of things can be very dangerous. It'd be easy to make mistakes.

But I hope you get your fic ^^ I'd give it a chance, too.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
That is true. I've come across a couple before and I was linked to one down below! :)

So I quess my secret has been answered! Kinda glad no-ones raging at me as if it was a "fetish". I mentioned it before in a forum once and everyone treated it as such. But since it would remind me of my brother - it be creepy.

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a really interesting idea. I'm not involved in HP fandom so I'm not sure if it exists or not, but I hope you find something you like, now or in the future.

[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Those kind of fics do exist- one just has to have the patience to dig for them. And actually, despite the amount of badfic on ff.net- there are some really good ones.

[identity profile] takkid.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, beat me to the punch.

I know what you mean OP.

My brother's special too.

[identity profile] berseker.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Aw I was going to rec this one. ♥

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh thank you! I had missed that one

I know most people want to write average-intelligence Harry, but I always figured his past with violence (magic in head) and somewhat uncaring family would stunt growth somewhere.

Aaww it even has a caring Petunia. Don't get those much these days, it looks enjoyable!

We're going to read this one together. My bro loves Harry Potter

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the rec! This fic was amazing.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the rec! I would have never thought of that plot before, but it was an amazing read.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Are Squibs admitted to Hogwarts? I mean, I know Filch works there, but did he ever take classes? I don't know, I'm genuinely curious; I would think it would be hard to, say, complete Charms or Transfigurations coursework if you can't use magic.

That being said, this fic does sound extraordinarily interesting. Being a Squib aside, Harry with a learning disability would definitely shed a different light on the story, as well as -- like you said -- the way others would treat him, and I'd really like to read it.

That said, I imagine Snape would be even MORE of a dick, and that just makes me . . . >(

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they'd admit Harry because he's special and just a late bloomer and all those other excuses the Ministry could make about his 'condition'?

Or maybe there are disabilities where you can do magic, just not do it quite right. Dysmagica.

Honestly, I hope Squibs don't go to school at Hogwarts. I imagine it'd be really fucking depressing.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
They're not. I could swear there's a line where Neville or someone is surprised to get his Hogwarts letter. But even if not there would be no way they'd admit one since nearly all the classes involve magic and it's suggested wizards pretty much pretend squibs don't exist.

I love Harry Potter, but it bugged me that despite the narrative's insistance that Harry had never had a friend or been shown any love from the moment he was adopted by the Dursleys, he still had flawless social skills and was able to make friends and deal with people so easily.

Never having been shown any human kindness in his life should have really screwed him up emotionally. He wouldn't have adapted to friendship so easily, and when all those people praised him, he probably would have assumed they were making fun of him.

But anyway, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I love outsider looking in stories. I didn't really give a shit about squibs when they were first brought up - I was just like "Huh. Interesting concept. Moving on." But the few muggle/wizard interactions Rowling wrote made me want more; especially since most of those, at best, were "lol muggles!" and at worst pretty much ignored the fact they couldn't defend themselves against a first year, let alone a dark lord and his evil merry men. Agh, this is getting off topic. Point is, there's a pretty huge facet of the potter world Rowling left untouched, and I think it actually suffers a bit for that.

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
No I think that sounds really interesting OP.

[identity profile] avatarmn.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, nobody has said this? And now no one will read it, because I'm so late. Sigh.

That character you want to read? He exists. His name is Neville Longbottom. He is the Almost Chosen One, and the exploration of what if someone who was more flawed had been The Boy Who Lived.

[identity profile] dandelion-cloud.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought too. Also Luna is special too, why is it important that the "special" person is the main character?

...Wait, seriously? There's a big difference between a kid who has self-esteem issues and a kid who has developmental delays.
