reminds me of this fuckface: http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com who constantly pesters any WoW or DA artist to draw free fap material for him, usually by half-assed compliments and sucking up.

i feel your pain, OP /nerdrage

[identity profile] ceruleansan.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh God I know that guy. Except he harassed me over notes for being Muslim.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
he's a passive aggressive douche. i normally wouldn't give a fuck about all the art requests, but the fact that he has no problem calling someone out and having his stupid friends harass them further is what takes the cake for me.

i only wish he'd be banned already. but fuck me, deviantart mods are just as bad as most of the time.

IMAD :(

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say this is a common feeling in the art community, not just fandom wise. I often get approached with requests even though I write that I do not do them.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I did some animated icons as commissions and I was swamped with requests for free ones after they were posted, and I do very, very little fan art for anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
This also a common problem in every art, not just the visual. I work in props and this week got two calls from complete strangers who wanted me to build them something for no money. Like I don't have rent to pay.

//mini rant is ranty!//

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. It's everywhere, fandom or not. And those people generally aren't very thankful if you DID do it anyway.

BAAAAAWWWW

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, This is as self congratulatory as hell.

The number of people that ask for free art really isn't all that high, and certainly not so many that you cant be bothered for a polite refusal.

Unless you mean, Im so good and in demand, that I get inundated with requests every single day. BAAAWWWW Woe is my talent and popularity.

BNF much?

Re: BAAAAAWWWW

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, nope. Not really a BNF, as I don't really wanna be one and I'm more a lurker anyway. And I do think I'm an ok artist, but I'm no such a stuck up bitch that I think I'm god damned awesome. Quite frankly, I criticize myself rather harshly.

And yes. I HAVE gotten more requests than I want, and it's usually from random people in the Star Wars fandom, but it's been in the MLP fandom a lot lately cause I did some ponies of some characters from ANOTHER fandom and I've gotten quite a few, one of which is VERY demanding, requests to draw them some.

And sure, it may not be an everyday thing. It never has been, but I'd like to be in this fandom as peacefully as possible and not get "Hey, draw me as a pony." More times than not. So, stop assuming that I think it's an everyday kind of thing. We all know what assume translates to. :D

And, I am usually polite. Except, I have on my front page that I don't do requests. So when I GET requests, you can't fault me for getting annoyed at these people who don't take the god damn time to read things first.

DA

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. And most of the requests come from people whom you've never seen before, and should you actually draw them anything, will never see or hear from again.

Re: BAAAAAWWWW

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me.

There are a LOT of people who think that just because someone can draw, they owe anybody who strolls along free art. It has very little to do with being popular, or being a BNF. I'm not a very well-known artist, but I still get suck-ups who want me to draw shit for them for free.

Your attitude is remarkably similar to a lot of the people who I've been harassed by-- namely that you seem to think an artist should be grateful or at least not annoyed by a bunch of moochers trying to get them to work for free. Some of us make our living this way and let me tell you, it's obnoxious as HELL when people with entitlement complexes think you owe them something just because you've got the ability to make what they want.

That's my bread and butter your fucking with ~ Charles Foster Ofdenson

Words to live by ;)

Re: BAAAAAWWWW

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh no it doesn't work that way. Good, Bad, Popular or unknown, I have never met an artist that didn't have some entitled asshat clamoring for free shit Without even asking nicely or respectfully no less .

Never.

I'm so sorry that we are "self congratulatory" for wanting some compensation for our work *plays the worlds smallest violin just for you*

And frequency doesn't really impact the Annoying Factor either.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Baaaw rant. No-one is going to care if you do rant about this. It's such a common problem.

Y'know what? It's never going to stop. I'm assuming you're halfway talented.

Buckle up and either keep replying with "No" - or if it is a repeat person, BLOCK THEM/ignore them/forget about them.

goddamn it's the internet, not the street. Ignore~
ext_84085: (bones - i ken fix it)

[identity profile] lunayoshi.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
While I think you're being a bit harsh on the OP, I agree that it is a common problem. I have it myself, not gonna lie--though in being AWOL from drawing, it's reduced considerably. Still.. for some reason, the thought of banning/ignoring these people never crossed my mind.

I am SO going to do that. Thanks, anon, for the obvious suggestion that I should have thought of LONG before now. ♥ <~~ not sarcasm, I swear.

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
True but that doesn't make it any less annoying and if OP wants to rant then I see no problem with that.

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Off topic but...I can't stop staring at your icon O_O

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe I love this it's my "any occasion" icon :D I got it from someone else here actually.

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Represent, OP, represent. I am by no means a "popular" artist but I get entitled people who seem to think they can just get art from me for nothing IRL all the same.

ART COSTS MONEY

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to use this as a reason to rant- yes people, art costs artists money. Art supplies are expensive, computer programs are expensive, computers are expensive and even TIME is in a way, expensive.

So if you are asking for "free art" you are essentially asking an artist to spend MONEY ON YOU. This is why many artists only do it for loved ones, and often only on special occasions, because giving art means giving up time/money.

So yes, even one request for "free art" can be too many. Please stop asking.

If you want art offer money, or see if you can trade something. Don't belittle my career, my time, or my money.
