Word of God says he's representing the UK on behalf of the family, but he IS England. I'd rather they include the other parts of the UK in fic than use a different name for the character.

This is true. Doesn't he actually specifically mention his "brothers" that he's standing in for because they can't be trusted to behave, or something like that?

But what if it was a choice between a fic all about WWII that kept referring to England but didn't mention any of the others, or the same fic that referred to the UK?

I mean, a fic in which we see England and the rest would be awesome, but in the absence of canon characters for the others, that sort of fic is rare.

Genuinely curious, not trying to be snarky.

When I read fic, I know that the rest of the UK exists even if they don't appear, because we know from canon that England has a family. He isn't just a antromorphic nation, he's a person with a difficult relationship with his family, who is friends with fairies and doesn't like France. The private side of the nations is the biggest reason why I like Hetalia so much, and I think some of that disappears if we conflate England and UK. I just think it's weird to speak about England as if he was the whole country when we know that there isn't really a "UK" in Hetalia, it's England and the still unseen Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
