Well, someone has their disdain hat on for us ignorant plebes of American Hetalia fans.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Fact: UK is called England by most of the English-speaking fandom.
Fact: Most of the English-speaking fandom is from the US.
What some US-based people on f!s, at least, have said: 'England' and 'the UK' tend to be conflated in the US.

Yeah, not seeing the problem with the secret here.

I swear I've read like 10 secrets saying this exact same thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Word of God says he's representing the UK on behalf of the family, but he IS England. I'd rather they include the other parts of the UK in fic than use a different name for the character.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-06-01 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true. Doesn't he actually specifically mention his "brothers" that he's standing in for because they can't be trusted to behave, or something like that?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
But what if it was a choice between a fic all about WWII that kept referring to England but didn't mention any of the others, or the same fic that referred to the UK?

I mean, a fic in which we see England and the rest would be awesome, but in the absence of canon characters for the others, that sort of fic is rare.

Genuinely curious, not trying to be snarky.

You've got a point on the first one, but seriously? Most people call him England because he has brothers. You know. Those other parts of Great Britain. I imagine that some Scots would be offended if they were called English, etc etc.

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you mean, but it's kind of easier to refer to him as England, especially in historical times when the United Kingdom wasn't united yet.
And on the other side: Britain isn't UK either. It IS very difficult. But referring to him to England is still more understandable than calling him Britain, I think.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Like many have said before me, most people call him England because he is England, and is simply standing in for his "brothers" who represent the rest of the UK. They exist, even if they don't have canon appearances. So, yes, I refer to him as England because that is what canon refers to him as.

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I live in the U.K. and I don't get why you're pissing blood about the distinction, especially since Hetalia itself isn't exactly completely accurate about history, either.

lol take some chill morphene

Hetalia fans are retards that worship genocide. Nothing new.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 12:49 am (UTC)(link)

Scotland sends a small bird to peck him in the face in canon your argument is invalid

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Anon fails to recognize that in the original Japanese, this character is "イギリス (Igirisu)," which is a katakana-ization of "England."

Japanese does have a word for "The United Kingdom," which HARDLY ANYONE EVER USES IRL - INCLUDING HIMARUYA

So really, Anon - you can't blame American fans for this one.

Actually, no.

If he's supposed to be the UK, why are Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland different characters?

Wouldn't this be a more important distinction to make in many historical periods, not less? Even recent history.

Unless the UK likes fighting with himself.

[identity profile] houdini-splicer.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for reminding me why I stay away from actual Hetalia fandom.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
.....this again?

I agree on the naming, fwiw, though I've also given up on fandom's naming sense (I call him England simply because everyone in fandom did so when I joined.) But when people keep insisting that he's only England and nothing more I always wonder just where they think the rest of the UK was in the WW stories. I mean, unless they want to insist that it was only England who was affected...

Well if you're going for historical accuracy, England was used as a catch-all for Britain for many years, so it would be perfectly accurate to call him England, depending on the time period.

And I really wish I could remember when it stopped. It'll come to me.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Blah blah blah Americans are dumb blah blah. I'm a speshul snowflake from a country where this mistake is not made. Never mind how HUGELY diverse the Hetalia fandom is, and how probably about 50% of it is non-American anyway. Never mind that most fans from the UK itself, refer to him as England without really seeming to mind.

We can't call him the UK because can you imagine actually using that in fics and such? "Hey United Kingdom!" It's awkward as hell. No one calls America "United States" for the same reason (well and because he's called "America" in 90% of official stuff).

We can't call him Britain because that is incorrect, as it doesn't include Northern Ireland which is also part of the UK.

We can't call him England because he's more than that.

So what do you propose we call him? UK doesn't work either, imho. That's essentially calling someone by an abbreviation.

Once upon a time, he WAS just England though, before the United Kingdom existed. And he is made up of English stereotypes, not Scottish or Welsh or Northern Irish stereotypes. So if I wanted to choose a name that isn't a total mouthful that sounds completely silly when trying to use it as a person's name, I might choose England. Not to mention, he has been called England (in English) on official Japanese merchandise before, but they have never used Britain (in English).

And my god, by calling him England in a fanfic, no one is meaning to imply that only the England part of the country was involved in WWII or whatnot. Where you'd even get that, I don't know.

As a Scottish fan, I can see where you're coming from but I tend not to complain about people referring to him as England mostly because I'm grateful for the distinction :/ Using the name England does mean trading in better recognition of the other countries' participation but since they're not characters yet, I could understand why a writer would try not to mention them much. I'd rather the rest of the United Kingdom were acknowledged AND written as being separate characters but canon as it is makes that awkward so I tend not to take it personally if people decide that England represents himself and his brothers as the United Kingdom and go for the name truer to his character. That doesn't mean I'm entirely happy seeing the UK being represented this way but I get why people do it.

Tl;dr, it sucks but this is fandom, not super srs bsns history and I'd rather a personification of England wasn't extended to personify the other UK nations as well to compensate for an inaccuracy people are mostly aware of.

Hetaliafags are retarded

I am British and I agree with you 100%. It drives me up the wall.

I was quite happy when the English dub referred to him as Britain but sadly fandom has ignored that.

Really I wish Himaruya had made England and Britain separate characters. England could have fused with Scotland to make Britain. Oh well, never mind.
