So what do you propose we call him?

Britain. (That's what I called him until I got into the fandom.)

As for whether it's incorrect or not - as long as official sources and various style guides say it's a synonym for the UK then for me it's a synonym for the UK.

But it is incorrect? Britain is not the UK. By calling him Brtain, it's leaving out a chunk of the UK. Britain is a name for the largest island in the British isles, not a country.

The largest island is Great Britain.

And again - I'm not British so I can't say I'm familiar with all possible usages of certain words, especially if there's so much confusion about them as about this one. But if it's good enough for the Foreign Office (http://digitaldiplomacy.fco.gov.uk/en/guidance/content/editorial/style/uk-britain) (and The Times, The Gaurdian Guardian & Observer, the British Council, etc.) it's good enough for me. *shrug*

We favour the modern usage of UK and United Kingdom over Britain and British (UK business, United Kingdom foreign policy, UK embassy and ambassador and high commissioner).

In any case, I think England is fine, and people using it is not a result of people not knowing the difference between England and the UK as the secret maker implies. It's a result of people knowing the difference, but still choosing England as what they deem the best to refer to him as.

But again: So Britain and British are synonymous with United Kingdom.

Maybe it's not the most PC thing ever but there you have it.

I personally don't mind people calling him England (I call him England, if only because everyone else does so). It's just that technically we could call him something else. (And all the people insisting that he's only England and not the UK while ignoring everything that points toward him being the UK make my head hurt.)
