(Anonymous) 2011-06-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)Fact: Most of the English-speaking fandom is from the US.
What some US-based people on f!s, at least, have said: 'England' and 'the UK' tend to be conflated in the US.
Yeah, not seeing the problem with the secret here.

Fact: Apparently OP is unaware of this, while the majority of us (other?) English speaking fans, who, as you and OP have pointed out, are from the US, are aware of it.
Fact: Therefore, yes we do call the character England sometimes, because the author himself has indicated him to be England, even though he also stands in for the other parts of the UK, who can therefore be assumed to have their own personifications even though they have not made canon appearances in the series.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 04:42 am (UTC)(link)All in all, I rather say England because UK is a mouth full and it helps that he's the actual England within the UK anyway even if its wrong. Like Prussia is still called Prussia when he was a kid even though his name was actually the State of the Teutonic Knights. Too much of a pain in the ass to say that mouthful.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 05:20 am (UTC)(link)Anyways, because of the fact his brothers are still around means he's *not* the whole UK as far as that goes, but he represents them in international matters. Saying that the fact he represents them there because he is the whole UK, is kinda like saying that the frontman of a company/band/what have you *is* the whole company/band/ect.

FACT: Apparently the majority of fandom is STILL operating under various fanon beliefs that they believe canon, without checking the author's actual words.

1) Each character "is" one country, in and of him/herself, with the exception of the countries which "are" two characters.
2) The character in question here "is" England, in and of himself.
3) The character in question is also a stand-in for the other parts of the UK, but is not in and of himself the other parts.
4) Getting bent out of shape when the character in question is referred to as England, when that is who/what he is, even though he also stands in for the other parts of the UK who/which he is not, is i) a sign that you are taking Hetalia way too seriously and ii) a sign that you aren't really thinking it through all the way, especially since the fanworks that call him "England" tend to focus on him AS England, and not as the entire UK.For example, ANY fanwork dealing with his relationship with America.

1) Like Sealand?
2) The character in question here is England and the UK by word of god. Seriously, the question went "is he 'Ingurando'?" and the answer was "he's 'Igirisu' and he's only 'Ingurando' when his brothers are involved."
3) see 2)
4) Uh, I don't get bent out of shape over people calling him England. I call him England. I don't really care unless people start insisting that he's not the UK and start attributing things to Himaruya that he never said (as far as I'm aware).
especially since the fanworks that call him "England" tend to focus on him AS England, and not as the entire UK.For example, ANY fanwork dealing with his relationship with America.
Wow, generalizing much? And so according to your fandom experience all AmericaxEngland fanworks say it was only England that participated in, say, the world wars? Or that it's only England that has a special (or however you want to call it) relationship with the US, not the rest of the UK? Um, how many AmericaxEngland fanworks have you read? O_o
