oh, this being said: the asperger's thing truly was uncalled for. I agree that self-diagnosis and misdiagnosis is a major problem, but much like the ADHD panic during the 90s where parents deliberately had their children misdiagnosed, it becomes a serious problem for people who actually have it. Some of us really do suffer from these conditions. I am ADHD, not autism-spectrum; but I had to deal with similar stigmas in real life as teachers refused to believe my condition was a real thing, and that I was making up excuses for laziness.
Being a dick to people with disabilities doesn't make you edgy or cool, no matter how many self-diagnosed whackjobs do or do not exist.

hot damn I think I was young enough to miss that happening. might explain why my parents didn't get me tested til I was in high school :|

The problem is that now, at least here, there is the situation where doctors are scared to give the AD(H)D diagnosis, because they're afraid they'll get accused of wanting to drug kids with ritalin. And now a lot of people who would fall under that label, do not get helped. Or worse, they do get a proper diagnosis, but teachers dismiss their parents as being overly fussy.

Ahhhhhhh you are the hero of this thread ahhhhhh

I have FRIENDS who don't believe I'm actually ADHD and that I should just drop my medication because its too much money to 'waste' every month when it's helped my work ethic and social confidence more over the last year than the myriad of natural products and cures that my mother has tried in avoidance of diagnosis for my entire life.

Ugh, that's never happened to me but I sympathize. I still have professors (in bloody grad school!) who refuse to believe it, and also who refuse to believe that I can't magically make my handwriting readable (I just can't! i need to type things guys!)
