But..the author flat-out SAID that she approved of the casting. If the actress didn't fit the look she intended, there was no way she would have said that.

Actually, Collins has said in several interviews that she didn't imagine a race for Katniss, and that she'd left it ambiguous on purpose. I don't think that any of us are arguing that Lawrence can't play the part. She's a great actress, and will no doubt make a great Katniss. That's not the argument.

The argument is that because Collins herself had no specific physical outline for Katniss other than racially ambiguous characteristics (dark/olive skin, grey eyes, black hair), it's unfair for a casting call to only ask for Caucasian actresses to audition for the part.

I don't know the fandom so I assumed from the secret that the character was canon-logically white/latina mixed. If that's so then yes, the issue isn't that a white actress is playing her but that it was the only option when her race is ambiguous.
