I've yet to see someone be encouraged for behaving like a total asshole simply because they have "aspergers". People use it as an excuse, but they don't get petted the way the OP seems to think they are.

Meanwhile some of us actually do have aspergers, and we do come here because it's one of the few places where we can be ourselves and not judged for obsessive interests and offputting body-language.

This. My best friend has Aspberger's and it pisses me off to see people both pretend to have it and then expect pity...or, in the contrary, actually have it and then have people write it off like it doesn't exist.

Not to mention that for people who were 'missed' in childhood, self-diagnosis is pretty much a prerequisite for adult diagnosis... or that official diagnoses, at least here in the land of no universal healthcare, require resources that not everyone has access to.

...and maybe I just hang out in the wrong (right?) parts of the internet, but I see way more people complaining about that kind of wankery than I ever see anything resembing the behavior in question. I'm beginning to wonder if the whole phenomenon is some kind of strawman argument.

Yup. I can think of several people who didn't get a diagnosis in childhood because there just simply was not as much information even five years ago, let alone ten or fifteen. One of my close friends lives in a major US city and wants to get an actual diagnosis and therapy, but everyone she's called does not treat adults, only children. They don't even do evaluations for adults.

I have to admit, for some reason this single sentence pisses me off more than anything I've read on here in...a while!

The attitude that my friend has gotten is that since asperger's is considered a developmental disorder, by the time a child reaches adulthood, it's "too late" to do anything, so they don't even want to bother with it. It's bullshit. I mean, I could see the pediatric doctors turning away adults because of their specialization, but some of the offices she's talked to have been for regular psychiatric doctors. It's screwed up.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yea, that is so fucked up. I am honestly surprised, I thought there was support for adults with Aspergers, and part of that support just getting a dang diagnosis and help in general from trained doctors.

Wow. I really sorry your friend has to deal with that.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, diagnosing for a lot of disorders like that actually sucks? My ex-bf had Asperger's, and while he did have a official diagnosis eventually, it was basically his mom who tried to teach him coping mechanisms to deal with the world. Which included things like practicing facial expressions in front of a mirror. She mostly got this info from books, not from doctors.

I myself was literally diagnosed with a "undefined concentration disorder", which as far as I can tell is probably ADD, but the doctors, after a whole day of testing in hospital, managed to exclude dyslexia, but couldn't be bothered with an official diagnosis, which actually makes it harder to get the medication I need, and made it more difficult at school to get understanding for it.

Undefined concentration disorder. Wow, they really sent you home with an answer that was well thought out and helpful!

...Kidding obviously lol. The fact that this makers it difficult to get the right medication kind of makes my blood boil x.x
